Product Description The illegitimate son of Marvin Gaye, rocks with the heart of Hendrix & the soul of Prince, the result? A real raw Soul with a taste of black Rock 'n' Roll! Cody is featured on the Roots' single 'The Seed' & the original version is on this album. CD 2 is a .com When you put the word "masterpiece" in the title of your debut double CD, you'd damn well better be able to back it up. Thankfully, Cody Chesnutt has the goods. This precocious, sex-obsessed, spaced-out, spiritual singer is practically bursting at the seams with talent and ideas. With The Headphone Masterpiece, he delivers a homemade, lo-fi stew made of smooth funk, forceful rock, and gritty hip-hop, all topped off by the sweet-crooning voice of a great soul singer. Across 36 tracks, Chesnutt invites you into his psyche, and it's a unique journey to say the least, wending as it does from the weightiest of spiritual concerns to that morning's hard-on. So is it a masterpiece? Well, not quite. Even Mr. Chesnutt must believe that he's got better music still in him. But The Headphone Masterpiece is an ambitious opening salvo from an artist who may well take his place in the celebrated lineage that extends from Hendrix and Sly Stone through George Clinton, Prince, D'Angelo, and so on. Once he learns to harness his surging electricity, Chesnutt may offer us a true masterpiece--or even a few of them. --Marc Greilsamer

Really good, but not excellent
Cody ChesnuTT looks to have quite a future in front of him based on this album. The hooks are all there, and so is the feeling. The production is very primitive -- it's not glossy like most of what you hear on R&B radio today -- but that's a definite charm. If you're looking for R. Kelly, this is not the place to look. If you're looking to fill the void that Prince left, this is a nice place to start. But if you like artists such as the Roots, Erykah Badu, and even Outkast then this is something worth trying.

This Man is Capable of Much More
When I first heard the track "Looks Good in Leather," I knew that there was a very unique sound to this guy and I wanted to hear what he had to offer. His voice is impeccable and to have been recorded so cheaply, this album definitely has a lot to offer. My only complaint on this album was the fact that some of the tracks on this album are cut short and leave you wanting to hear more. In ways, however, this adds to the charm of the album. This album definitely has the vibe of a demo tape and I think it was a great way for Cody Chestnutt to kick off his solo career. I only hope that some of the great songs that were cutoff on this CD get polished up and completed for one of his next efforts. Oh and if you haven't heard his song on the Gridlock'd Soundtrack under the alias of Anonymous, you should really check it out.

Don't know what I expected.
The description of this collection online was accurate, yet somehow I saw more musical talent in the sample pieces online than I expected. I simply could not stomach the explicit lyrics.

this album is some of the most unappreciated folk music ...
this album is some of the most unappreciated folk music ever made. I could probably write forever about the virtues of the headphone materpiece, but id rather be listening to the album. you should buy it. you won't regret it.

good and bad
some tracks are VERY catchy and solid (although he gets a bit graphic with some of his language/descriptions) - others meander around - overall solid effort

Meh
Okay, not great. Seller sent it in terrible condition, Un-packaged and damaged, side of the case was crushed in. The music isn't that great either unless you're into chilling out with headphones on listening to minimalist music.

Lives up to its title
This is another CD I just had to check out after hearing Chesnutt (apparently, it's written "ChesnuTT") sing on Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Unrated Widescreen Edition) . He has a very good voice and, given the company he was keeping on this DVD (not to mention his inspiring guest appearance on The Roots' Phrenology ), I was curious as to why I hadn't heard more of him or seen any of his videos on MTV Base. One listen to this CD and I had my answer. He's all over the place. Not in a bad way but I could immediately see why it might've been very difficult for label execs or commerical radio (or more importantly, for listeners) to categorise or pigeon hole him. In this day and age, such categorisation or pigeon holing seems essential if commercial success is the primary goal.Sometimes using his natural voice and sometimes a falsetto that while never off-key or flat, always sounds incredibly raw, the man leads on a complex journey covering 36 songs spread across 2 discs, through soul, neo-soul, electronica, hip-hop, spoken word, rock and some of the most sexually explicit lyrics I've ever heard. And I've heard quite a number. The second disc is "enhanced" and I assume this means it does something when you put it in your PC but after the Vivian Green Vivian debacle a few years ago, I will not be attempting to find out. The music alone is more than enough for me, thank you."The Headphone Masterpiece" is a very ambitious title for any CD but I think ChesnuTT lives up to it here. Especially when you consider the fact that he's "written, arranged, composed, performed & engineered (recording & mixing)" every single song. If you can stay with him while he takes you over musical valley and hill, I believe you'll find it quite a full and enjoyable experience. You definitely need an open mind though - in more ways than one. This is more Van Hunt than Ne-Yo or Omarion.Personally, I love it.

Unashamedly brilliant
This album is certainly not for everyone. If you like high production predictable pop, browse off to a Top 40 list. This, bless Cody, is a work of the heart. There are some songs which simply don't work well, but they are few and far between. You are getting a double album for the price of one disc -- you can't complain. But duff songs aside, there are so many truly great songs that there is no reason to deny this album. Hats off to Cody - like all great albums, he hasn't taken the path of least resistance, lowest-common-denominator cliche-riddled music. Not for everyone, but for those who like raw, emotional music from a real artist -- you shouldn't let this pass you by.

Not a really good Album
This is just for devoted fans of Cody Chesnut. I do recomend his second album, but this one is not really what I expected.

Brutto e registrato male
