The Sun Shines Bright [Blu-ray]

Famed director John Ford once said that "The Sun Shines Bright" was his favorite film, and it is not hard to see why. Basically, this is a remake of his much earlier, "Judge Priest," from 1934 (starring Will Rogers). Ford critics tend to favor that earlier film version of Irvin Cobb's delightful short stories of old Kentucky, but I have always believed that this version is superior, not the least because Charles Winninger's acting is actually sharper and the dialogue crisper. Certainly, Rogers was a superb actor, but too many times his dialogue seems to trail on and on, becoming nearly unintelligible. Then, again, filmmaking in 1934 was not the same as in 1953.Winninger was an accomplished Hollywood role player; but in "The Sun Shines Bright" he demonstrates that he was no simple comprimario or "co-star." He alternately illustrates humor, wisdom, sadness, and wistfulness. It's a superb performance. Despite the inevitable criticism that may come regarding this film not being "politically correct" (it isn't!), Ford probes human emotions and character, irrespective of race or social status. And the old Judge Priest---"trumpeter little Billy Priest"---understands fully the reality of justice, which he metes out to all, white and black, decent people and prostitutes. Certainly he does so in a social context that some present-day viewers may find foreign to "modern" sensibilities; but, getting beyond that stifling veneer of PC thought, and enjoying "The Sun Shines Bright" on its own terms can be an immensely rewarding experience.Ford was indeed correct; it may well be one of his best films. Co-stars include John Russell, Slim Pickens, Russell Simpson, Arleen Whelan, Milburn Stone (of later "Gunsmoke" fame), Jane Darwell, and Steppin' Fetchit.I have the Blu-ray version, which is superb. My thanks to Olive Films. Recommended.

This movie is a rare find !! And NOT TO BE MISSED ! What a perfectly LOVELY story ! Iam so glad I happened to find this rare old gem! Like a blessing... UNEXPECTED ! Thankful to have it ! Great actors ! So surprising and sweet! A good example too. Glad I took a chance and bought this one. I hope most people buy this and see it. The main character proves out to be a wonderful and rare kind hero. Don't miss this one! Buy it ! See it!

If I see that a movie being shown has Charles Winninger I know I will not be disappointed that includes this one .

TSSB could not be better. This Blu-ray version even has additional scenes (Director's Cut, I presume ?) not available in other versions or I-net sources.But the best feature seems to be an extremely high quality 35mm source element (scanned directly from an original fine-grain inter-negative, perhaps?) representing a funny/sad/fluid story of the Early South -- during or soon after reconstruction -- when honesty, loyalty ... as well as hold-overs from North-South rivalry ... were beginning to be appreciated, adjusted to and promoted with humor and a large measure of common understanding.Highly recommended !!!D. I was anxious to get this DVD since it is basically John Ford's own remake of his wonderful 1934 movie "Judge Priest" starring Will Rogers. Unfortunately, it has nowhere near the charm and humor the earlier movie did, and seems to have been hurriedly put together and filmed. Still, it does have some nice moments, and is probably worth a watch to all Ford fans.

Lovednit. Sweet story featuring an elderly judge, who still understands honor, decency, justice, courage, congeniality, etcetera in the face of a money grubbing, Ill-mannered progress. ”Didn’t like: a bit too much of the “moonlight and magnolias” romanticism. Portrayal of blacks belittling and disgusting, until the viewer realizes that they are the most honorable, decent, just, courageous, congenial, and DIGNIFIED characters in the whole movie. Wonderful irony that the hasty or judgmental viewer might easily miss. Nonetheless, John Ford’s favorite movie...and mine. Approach with a warm heart.

Irving Cobb wrote about us as true to life. We aren't perfect people but we coexist with one another in brother/sisterhood and love.

Remake deshalb, weil er 1934 mit Rücksicht auf die Zensur auf zwei wichtige Handlungsstränge verzichten musste und das nachholen wollte: Erstens das Verhindern eines versuchten Lynchings eines unschuldigen schwarzen Verdächtigen, Nummer zwei ist das Begräbnis einer Prostituierten (Prostituierte waren 1934 noch nicht erlaubt).John Ford war immer großartig als Dokumentar amerikanischen Kleinstadlebens und hatte ein Herz für Kleinstadthelden wie den Richter, die Kraft ihrer Menschlichkeit eine intolerante Gesellschaft zum Besseren verändern. Steppin Fetchit spielt den schwarzen Sidekick, und auch wenn man die Darstellung heute durchaus kritisch sehen kann, finde ich, dass in erster Linie die Freundschaft zwischen ihm und dem Richter rüberkommt.Die Bildqualität ist gut, es gibt keine deutschen Untertitel, aber englische.Der Film gehört in jedes Filmregal eines jeden John Ford Fans.

"The Sun Shines Bright" pasaría poco menos que desapercibida dentro de la filmografía de Ford si no fuera porque, en una de sus siempre reacias entrevistas, el viejo maestro la consideró su película favorita entre las suyas. Eso es lo que ha hecho que la legión de estudiosos de Ford se lance en pleno a buscar todo tipo de valores en ella.Pero en mi opinión no hay más de lo que está a la vista : "Sun" no es "The Searchers", ni "Stagecoach", ni "Yellow Ribbon" ni "Liberty Valance", por citar algunos ejemplos, y no les llega a los talones. Es una película honesta en la que, con actores casi desconocidos y escasos medios, Ford presenta de forma quizá definitiva los que para él eran los pilares de la vida : La amistad inquebrantable por encima de todo; los principios eternos que se mantienen contra viento y marea aun cuando se consideran caducos; la defensa del débil y el castigo a quien abusa de él; el desprecio al puritanismo y las "buenas costumbres"; el perdón hacia los que erraron el camino y se arrepintieron de ello ; el respeto y la tolerancia del "otro" que nos respeta y juega limpio con nosotros (y la picaresca y la burla frente al que rebosa arrogancia) ; y finalmente la tranquilidad de conciencia (aun en contra de nuestros intereses personales) como valor supremo a conservar.Nada en definitiva que no hayamos visto mil veces en otras películas de Ford, pero concentrado aquí en la figura de uno de sus personajes fetiche de ficción, el Juez Priest (ya homenajeado por el director décadas antes en su filmografía), en una mezcla de comedia, drama y romance que no en vano son los elementos clave de la vida real, y conmueven al espectador como en tantas otras obras del maestro. Las aristas "políticamente incorrectas" están presentes (el tratamiento paternalista y cómico de los personajes de color) pero la honestidad y falta de prejuicios de Ford también quedan claramente reflejadas para quien quiera verlas. Además, el humilde alcance del proyecto no impide que "Sun" contenga dos momentos dignos de la antología fordiana más gloriosa : El enfrentamiento en solitario de Priest a la turba que pretende linchar a un jóven negro y, sobre todo, el entierro de la "mala mujer" que obliga a cada cual a elegir entre su propia conciencia y el miedo al "qué dirán".La edición en BR de "Eureka" (que es la que estoy comentando) es digna : La mejora en imagen y sonido es patente frente a las versiones de esta película que he visto en otros soportes. Pero no es un film que se luzca por ello : Las lecciones magistrales de fotografía o las localizaciones naturales que deslumbran en otras obras de Ford aquí están ausentes ; pero se agradece poder ver una copia decente de este modesto trabajo. Hay subtítulos únicamente en inglés para SDH , y los extras, más allá de un interesante libreto, se reducen a un comentario del film por McBride, documentado y minucioso, y un ensayo visual de Gallagher totalmente prescindible. Ambos sin subtitular.
