Picture says it all.
They are good quality, however I wouldn't class them as blackout. This picture was taken at 10am with cloudy skies. If you want total blackout then don't chose these.

Great blackout effect
Superb light-blocking quality. I attach a photo showing one side with the liner and one side without. I've knocked off one star because there is not enough choice of lengths and I had to spend ages shortening them to fit my curtains. Otherwise, excellent.

To answer the question of whether they work.
A few details first - my lounge is South facing and the TV position is governed by the various connections/plugs on the wall.During hot sunny days it was virtually impossible to see the TV even with the curtains closed, so I decided to purchase black out backing curtains to resolve this issue. These are made from a soft lightweight cloth rather than a plastic coated liner, so there is no funny smell when heated by the sun.Admittedly I had to sew the backing cloths to the tops of the curtains as I have tabs rather than pencil pleats - didn't take long but I think the photos speak for themselves. In regard to the thermal properties of these black out backing curtains, they certainly help to keep the room cooler during high temperatures, I've yet to experience using them during colder weather but if they retain heat as well as they keep the room cool - they should be fine.** So winter has been and gone and I can genuinely say that these backing curtains do in fact help retain the heat and would recommend these to anyone for both their black out and thermal qualities.

Great really did the job
Seem expensive at first for curtain linings. However these are slightly Cheaper then dunelm equivalent and delivered oo your door . I had bought one pair from dunelm for my daughters room, which worked really well although the fabric had a slight smell. I had wanted to order another pair for my sons room but living nowhere close to dunelm I checked amazon. These were great. Feel slightly lighter in weight than the dunelm ones but block the light just as well. Bought another pair for our bedroom window. They are really easy to fit once you get your head round the fact you hook the curtain hook the opposite way through to normal. I took the curtains down, pulled these into the same width, then took curtain hooks out of the curtains and re hooked the linings in, then hooked the same curtain hook into the original curtains.

Very good quality material
These blackout curtains are very good quality. Ive had blackouts before and the material resembles a shower curtain, these though are a lovely quality, i would even use them as curtains on their own. Im very happy with them and now my bedroom is darker i am sleeping better and not being woken up at first light. Overall im very impressed and happy.

Lets quite a lot of light through
I bought these because my thoughtful neighbour installed a motion sensitive light outside their back door, which is very close to my bedroom window. It comes on every time the wind blows and was preventing me from sleeping. The curtains do block out a lot of this light, but once the sun starts to come up they let quite a lot of light through and that isn't even direct sunlight as my window faces north. I don't think they would be much use if you were trying to sleep during the day. They are made of a soft greyish material and are quite easy to hang, as they hook onto the header tape. You really need to tack the edges to the existing curtains to stop them showing.I wouldn't buy them again.

Great Value.
My experience -No smell at all, as reported in other reviews. .Little weight so no problem with rail.100% blackout and a noticeable heat retention.I abandoned using extra hooks and instead removed the curtains spreading them on a bed at their closed width with the blackout on top and removed hooks at 4 inch intervals and then put them back them whilst catching the binding at the top of the blackout. The two move together perfectly.I added a few tacking stitches to the closing edge fixing the blackout to the curtain so it would not flap. Total time about an hour once I figured out how to do it.Result was vastly cheaper than sending the curtains back to have the lining changed. My fault as I chose not to have blackout when I ordered them.

Good quality but not 100% Blackout
These arrived a day early so good service there and the material is good quality and soft. Hanging proved a bit of trial and error because unlike with some brands the length of the blackout was not much shorter than the main curtains so you need to attach the lining to the upper pleats to prevent them hanging past the bottom of the curtains (can be fiddly when the main curtains are hung off the middle or lower pleats). Once hung did the job well and can sleep soundly again, although I'll note that if closed during a bright day some light does bleed through (I can see the window frame through the curtain) but not to a level that would cause anyone an issue sleeping.
