Speed Walking, 1 DVD (dänisches OmU)

Martin is a sensitive boy who loved his mother, as any young person would and is very upset because of what has happened. He is friends with another boy called Kim and a girl named Kristine. All of them are attracted to each other, both boys hankering after the girl. The boys like to spend private time with each other and I am wondering whether the boys would like to be with each other or Kristine until he film nears its end, but I don't want to make a spoiler alert for anyone. Kim is a handsome boy but has a wicked smile. Although this is a good film, it is badly let down due to the in ability to display English sub titles with any certainty. it is pot luck whether or not the English version comes up. I and others have complained before about this, but there is no help or advice forthcoming This is very annoying and the DVD producer should do something about itOne very peculiar thing about the sub titles: There is a zero titles, Danish titles and the English titles. But the English can only be accessed after the Danish one has gone through. Is this standard practice or has my disc got a fault on it?

Great movie, but didn't find the English subtitles. I saw the reviews that said start playing it and then switch to English subtitles with your remote, but I just play DVDs with my computer. My stand-alone DVD player quit on me some time back, but since I don't do DVDs much any more, I just use the player in the free VLC player on my computer. It's subtitle menu only listed German. However, it also had an "add subtitle file" option. I just searched for Speedwalking subtitles and found several versions in 5 languages. I pick an English one and had subtitles. After a while it got a minute or two behind, but it was still good enough to follow along. Maybe if I had installed a dedicated DVD playing app, it might have found the hidden English subtitles. If I start watching more DVDs I might do that. I opened the subtitle file in notepad to see if it would be easy to adjust the time once it was getting behind. No way. Each line of text had to have a start time and end time. It'd probably be less hassle to learn the language instead!

This is a classic coming of age tale. Teenage boy struggling to find his identity is suddenly touched by grief but displays tremendous strength of character to work through his issues and make a success of himself amidst all the adversity.A word of warning, however. The movie is in the original Danish language and although it is advertised as having English subtitles, they are not easily signposted. Neither the DVD cover nor the disc menu mentions an English language option at all. The trick is to start the movie with Danish subtitling and then use your player device remote control to find the English subtitles there.

The director, Niels Arden Oplev, impressed previously with Drommen (We Shall Overcome), another film whichcentres on powerful emotions experienced by young people.In Kapgang, Martin's emotions are put through the wringer as he has to find a way to come to terms with a family tragedy,proving himself the 'rock' for those around him to lean on.The scene at the cemetery is heart-rending. The 'speed-walking' (perhaps the source of Martin's inner strength) is fun to watchand the romantic feelings are so well portrayed - perhaps uniquely so in the history of film-making.So good that you can watch this film with English subtitles.

Fun and a very enjoyable watch really pleased I have seen this. great acting by all the young actors. There is a very sexual scene in the film so beware. but it is not gratuitous and it is in keeping with the theme of the movie. definitely well worth watching.

I have a bog standard dvd player and followed the same steps as the other reviewers to find the English subs using my remote once the film started, but they're only available in German. Really disappointed that this was mis-advertised as having English subs.

"Speed Walking" beginnt und endet mit einer Sport-Szene: Am Anfang ist das Geh-Training einer ganzen Schülergruppe zu sehen, am Ende ist es eben jener Wettkampf, für den zu Beginn trainiert wurde. Dazwischen liegen einige umstürzende Ereignisse.Das Gehen ist in dieser Geschichte, die vom 14jährigen Martin und einem ganz besonderen Sommer erzählt, mehr als nur eine Sportart. Es ist eine Metapher für den Fluss des Lebens, mit dem man Schritt halten muss. Mal muss man sich sehr anstrengen, da die Zeit rast, mal scheint die Zeit stillzustehen und doch muss es weiter gehen. Das Stillstehen der Zeit kommt durch den Tod von Martins Mutter zum Ausdruck. Alle drei Männer der Familie - Martin, sein Vater und sein älterer Bruder - gehen ganz unterschiedlich mit diesem tiefen Einschnitt um. Jeder braucht eine Weile, bis ein "Neustart" möglich ist. Das Rasen der Zeit ist eher durch die pubertätsbedingten Gefühle und Veränderungen von Martin ausgedrückt. Hin- und hergerissen zwischen einem bewunderten Mädchen und seinem besten Freund versucht Martin Körper, erste Küsse und Verliebtsein mit der schwierigen Situation zuhause irgendwie in Einklang zu bringen. Durch seine entwaffnend offene, ein wenig naive und optimistische Art begegnet er allen Herausforderungen. Am Ende ist - zeitlich gesehen - nur ein kleines Stück Weges miteinander gegangen, aber die Zukunft ist offener denn je.Der Regisseur Niels Arden Oplev hat neben Thrillern (z.B. Verblendung) auch das Coming-of-Age-Drama Der Traum inszeniert. Wie in "Der Traum" taucht Oplev mit "Speed Walking" in eine vergangene Epoche ein. Waren es in "Der Traum" die 60er Jahre so befinden wir uns nun in den 70er Jahren, was zum einen an Kleidung und Wohnungsausstattungen sichtbar wird, aber zugleich auch hörbar wird durch den Soundtrack mit vielen Pop-Klassikern. In "Der Traum" bildete die amerikanische Bürgerrechtsbewegung den Hintergrund bzw. die Deutungsfolie, nun ist es die optimistische Stimmung der 70er Jahre und die sexuelle Befreiung. Die "Annäherungsszene" zwischen Martin und seinem besten Freund gehört hier zu dem besten, was lange auf der Kinoleinwand zu sehen war, weil es authentisch und sensibel in Szene gesetzt ist: Zwei Vierzehnjährige entdecken Gefühle, Körper und Sexualität - in aller Unschuld. Insofern ist man dem Filmland Dänemark nachhaltig dankbar, dass mit so großer Natürlichkeit auch heute noch auf der Leinwand von schwierigen Zeiten des Aufwachsen und Aufwachens erzählt werden kann. Sehr sehenswert!Der Film liegt nur in Originalfassung mit Untertiteln vor, was aber durch die sehr in den Bann ziehende Erzählweise schon bald kaum noch wahrgenommen wird.

Quite interesting and VERY Danish in style and approach. I think sometimes European film tries to be too gritty and base, but in this instance the content works well in context and characters.

Un film étonnant sur l'adolescence, l découverte de son corps, de l'autre. La découverte des sens. Filmé avec Elegance.

Wieder einmal ein sehr gelungener Film über das Erwachsen werden und die Pubertät. Das Durcheinander der Gefühle welche Jungs so durchmachen auf dem Weg ein Mann zu werden, wird hier sehr überzeugend und mit Feingefühl gezeigt. Dazu der Verlust der Mutter und ein Vater welcher - nun sagen wir mal so - eine spezielle Art der Trauerbewältigung lebt, macht es dem Hauptdarsteller nicht einfacher.Teilweise etwas absurde und gewöhnungsbedürftige Story, vor allem was die Trauer über den Verlust der Mutter und Ehefrau betrifft, aber alles in allem gut in Szene gesetzt. Das Leben in der Kleinstadt von Jütland, könnte sich auch in jedem anderen Land abspielen. Musik und Mode der siebziger Jahre brachten mich zum Schmunzeln - der Schnitt von Jeans und Unterhosen kamen mir bekannt vor :-)Unter dem Strich war ich recht beeindruckt und würde die DVD auch nochmals ansehen.
