Monica's Streetcorner Symphony
A few years after a very promising debut album Monica scored big commercially with a duet with contemporary teen star Brandy for which this album got it's title. It was originally included on Brandy's sophmore set Never Say Never , a wonderful album produced by Rodney Jerkins. Now this album bares almost no resemblance to Brandy's latest album at the time at all. Whereas her second album favored a more stripped down, elegantly produced sound Monica's second set featured....well a full and elegantly produced sound. These albums sound more or less like two halves of the same whole and that not only has to do with a difference in producers but differences in both artists musical approch. On her second album Monica takes a much more commercial and modern approch to the music. By the time this came out in 1998 the style of contemporary R&B that basically extends into the type that's done today had firmly settled itself and Monica was on the cutting edge of that. After the orchestrated "Street Symphony" there's an edited version of the Brandy duet followed by the slinky groove "Ring Da Bell and "The First Night";that's a song discussing Monica's discussion with her boyfriend about not fooling around on the first date and no irony is lost as the song as it's built around a clevery looped sample of Diana Ross's 1976 classic Love Hangover because the subject matter could be seen as a modern day answer to Diana's original statement. There's also "Misty Blue",another excellent exercise for Monica's abilities as an interpretive vocalist on this version of the Dorthy Moore soul classic. On "Gone Be Fine" OutKast pay a visit for a blunted, jazzy hip-hop/funk excursion that is really the only song on this album that bares much resemblance to her debut all. A good deal of this album showcases Monica as a 90's R&B balladeer on songs such as "Inside","Take Him Back",the pretty "Angel Of Mine" and "For You I Will". True her style does have a more youthful resemblance to that of another contemporary of sorts Toni Braxton but she really brings a lot of her own flavors into it as well, mainly among them being a strong energy and vitality. Of course on "'Cross The Room" she really brings the Zhane-like disco-funk groove to the affair. This is a much more streamlined and polished album than her more direct, focused and funkier debut album but it shows a somewhat mellower side of her ability as she begins the journey away from her teens and into early adulthood. Also it really helped to establish her as no mere one off shot musically as well.

Pretty Good But Not a Classic
I like Brandy and all and she has a good career going on, but I don't think she should do duets with anyone whose voice is more powerful than hers. "The Boy Is Mine" is a good song that came out in 1998- the year that music began to really suck. The video was alright and Monica's hair looked great. But you know, if you're going to have a video that's about fighting over a guy, make sure that he's cute, okay? Mekhi Phifer is cool, but he's not all that. Anway, I enjoy the song and just recently I've found myself being able to relate to it, but that's another story for another time.

This is their best work
I luv the song that Monica and Brandy (2 of my All-Time Main Music picks) which is excellent and considered an A+. Everytime I hear that record, it reminds me of how they started working together on the track. U can't go wrong on this. Namean? It's off the album that which is Brandy's breakthrough "Never Say Never" which the hottest-selling CD and the best R&B album of All-Time. I still have it today which I bought it cheap at a thrift shop. If u luv Beyonce, A. Keys, Tamia, or whobody, then this is the right song 4 u.

Great instrumentation, passable vocals
The title says it all. Buoyed by a strong video and popular singers, this duet soared to the top of the charts in 1998. In hindsight, it's the background instrumentation that really makes the song. The throbbing bass line, the solo harp, and the seductive strings make this pop tune a memorable one. Brandy and Monica will never give Aretha, Chaka, or even Christina a run for their vocal money, but the two are acceptable in their roles of "battling ingénues" in this hit from recent memory.
