C89 is another celebration of the Eighties Indie scene, documenting a golden era when tuneful guitar-based bands made records on shoestring budgets, often issued on small labels with hand-made artwork, with little hope of mainstream exposure. This 3-CD box set follows previous best-selling collections C86 (2014), C87 (2016) and C88 (2017). C86 expanded the NME's genre-defining compilation with 50 extra tracks from the period. C87 and C88 were the imaginary sequels, picking up the story as the 1980s unfolded. Disc 1 is devoted to artists who haven't previously graced this series, who first made an impact in 1988/1989. Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, The La's, Milltown Brothers, The Family Cat and The Telescopes were among the indie scene's biggest names that year. Disc 2 revisits many of the bands who appeared on C88, with later singles or B-sides by The Stone Roses, Mock Turtles, Pooh Sticks, The Man From Delmonte, Bridewell Taxis, Popguns, etc... Sarah Records - which came to epitomise a certain type of Indie Pop - are represented by Brighter, The Orchids, Another Sunny Day and Christine's Cat. Other key indie labels also figure, such as Creation (The Revolving Paint Dream), Bristol's The Subway Organization (Korova Milk Bar, Choo Choo Train), Manchester's Playtime (The Rainkings, New Fast Automatic Daffodils), Sheffield's Native (Treebound Story, featuring Richard Hawley, and The Snapdragons), Brighton's La-Di-Da (Daisycutters, Bobby Scarlet, How Many Beans Make Five, Said Liquidator) and Liverpool's Pink Moon (Barbel, The DaVincis, Jactars). C89 also includes two previously unissued tracks..New names to the series include The Bardots, The Seers, Po!, The Ammonites, The Ogdens, Kit, The Candy Darlings, Jane Pow, Rorschach, etc. Several names feature personnel from notable bands, such as post-Razorcuts act Red Chair Fadeaway, post-Chameleons quartet The Sun And The Moon and post-La's combo The Onset. A perfectly compiled and lovingly curated indie pop time capsule
Even by Cherry Red's high standards this is a fabulous package. 72 indie pop nuggets from 1989 and great look back at the scene from that year, from the chart bound Stone Roses, Carter USM and Mock Turtles to a whole host of wonderful obscurities. For me it's the latter that really make this package such a treat. I was completely immersed in the fanzine culture at the time, so it's a real pleasure to rediscover the likes of The Daisycutters, The Mayfields and The Driscolls. And then there's a whole load rarities that completely passed me by back in the day that still shine and excite nearly 30 years later. Take a bow The Cherry Orchard, Riot Of Colour and The Rainkings among other delights. While I'm still discovering great new music deep into middle age, It's also nice to take a trip back in time occasionally. These 3 CD's (and the excellent accompanying booklet) remind me of that golden year and make me feel 19 again.

Indie-Pop Ain’t Noise Pollution!
It’s summer 2018 so that means it’s time to celebrate indie-pop 1989. Cherry Red could run and run with this series as the tuneage here is yet again of so high quality especially for fans of softly sung pop music with loudly strummed guitars. Indie-pop, (Stone Roses reference here), Don’t Stop!

Ich mache es kurz: Erstklassiger (remastered by the Master himself) Klang, mit Ausnahme der ersten 5 Uralt-Raritäten.Ich habe die alten SMB-Sachen nie so kristallklar gehört. Die Auswahl der Songs ist zudem exzellent!Noch kürzer für Steve Miller Fans: In 10 Jahren werdet ihr ohne zu zögern Eure Frau -für was auch immer- vermieten und den Porsche verticken, um in den Besitz dieses bislang nur 1995 in den U.S.A. erschienenen Box-Sets (3 CDs) zu kommen.Nee, das ist kein Witz. Dies hier bekommt man bald -im Gegensatz zu den genannten Preziosen- bald nur noch für sehr, sehr viel Geld.P.S. Nein, ich bin kein Chauvinist. Ich will nur klarmachen, dass Ihr Euch in den Allerwertesten beissen werden, dies nicht JETZT für ein paar Öcken erstanden zu haben.

Les articles relatifs à Steve Miller évitent rarement deux écueils : ceux qui se targuent de connaître le bonhomme s'attachent généralement à souligner sa filiation blues, attestée tout d'abord de manière anecdotique et épiphénoménale par la présence de T Bone Walker à son domicile texan de Dallas, lors d'une party, alors qu'il avait neuf ans, et par le fait qu'il a cotoyé à Chicago un certain nombre de légendes tels Muddy Waters ou Buddy Guy. Les autres se contentent de siffloter The Joker en enfilant leur Levi's, ou en essayant de l'enfiler, pour les plus stéatopyges. Nous ferons fi de ces derniers, qui méritent ce qui leur arrive. Quant aux premiers, si les faits qu'ils rapportent sont irréfutables, ils n'ont aucune conséquence sur la musique de Steve Miller. Que ceci soit dit une bonne fois pour toutes : Miller n'est pas un bluesman (sa voix, à elle seule, constitue, à ce titre, une fin de non-recevoir) et sa musique n'est pas du blues, ce qui ne l'empêche pas d'être parfaitement recommandable. Les premiers albums du Steve Miller Band, enregistrés entre 1968 et 1970 doivent être rattachés au courant psychédélique (le guitariste se trouvant à San Francisco) avec les défauts et les qualités inhérents au genre. Si on y trouve des traces de blues (où n'en trouve-t-on pas à l'époque ?), elles sont noyées dans la masse. Ce n'est pas leur faire injure de dire que ces productions sont un peu bordéliques et inégales. On y décèle toutefois ce qui va devenir sa marque de fabrique : un sens imparable de la mélodie et une orchestration d'une fluidité exemplaire d'où toute aspérité est bannie. Steve Miller, c'est un gros V8 , ça ronronne, c'est confortable, ça tourne sans effort, et on sent qu'il y en a sous le capot en cas de besoin. La formule va trouver son dosage parfait à partir de 1973, avec The Joker, puis avec Fly like an eagle (1976) et Book of dreams (1977). Dans ces trois albums, pas de gras, pas de déchets, une succession de hits avérés (Rockin me, Jet airliner) ou potentiels (la liste serait trop longue). Après, ça se gâte, ça tourne au n'importe quoi : morceaux d'une face ou presque, « effets » spéciaux dignes d'une version roumaine de Star Wars...etc. Le présent coffret est une réalisation exemplaire. Le premier CD (à l'exception des 4 premiers morceaux, dispensables...) couvre la première période en ne retenant que le meilleur. Le deuxième fait la part belle à la sainte trinité mentionnée plus haut. Quant au troisième, Miller lui-même, qui n'a toujours pas compris qu'il n'était pas un bluesman, indique qu'il est consacré à la plupart des blues qu'il a joués pendant ces années. En réalité, ce dernier CD ressemble comme un frère au précédent. Capitol a charitablement fait l'impasse sur la dernière période.Pistez ce coffret, il est pour l'heure indisponible, mais Amazon le propose de temps en temps à des prix intéressants. À défaut, jetez-vous sur l'édition CD/DVD de Fly like an eagle, avec Satriani en guest star qui aligne deux morceaux monstrueux, dont un Tore Down d'anthologie.Merci qui ?Tested and approves by SM.
