Spiritual Gifts: What They Are and Why They Matter

The best book I’ve read about spiritual gifts. Every Christian should read. Well researched and presented with great humility. It helped answer a lot of questions for me and caused me to really consider why I believe what I believe.

If you were raised Pentecostal or followed Word of Faith and the NAR movement, this book truly is an eye opener to the gifts God has given us and how to use and understand them properly.

I think the author did a great job of explaining spiritual gifts. Appreciate the part that says we should not fill out surveys to find our spiritual gifting, but that we should just step in and find what works for us.

This is probably one of the best books I have read on really looking at the spiritual gifts. I pre-ordered this book because Dr. Schreiner is the best NT scholar I know. He provided some excellent clarity to questions I had and I believe many others have as well. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you want a great book by a great man of God on what the spiritual gifts are and if they are present today then this is the book for you.

I find myself agreeing with cessationists but then also noting that the "quality of miracles" seems to have changed, and thus wondering if maybe I need another category. Here it is! If you are a zealot for either continuation or cessation, you probably will find this book wishy washy. If you are open-minded, you will appreciate his balanced treatment and may well agree with his conclusions.

One of the best books out there on the topic. Could have gone deeper, but fair defense on the topic without being dogmatic on issues which we don’t have clear evidence. Much better than MacArthur.

for various reasons i’ve been reading about spiritual gifts for the past couple years, and found this book to be helpful. it is honest with some of the weaker arguments for cessationism and is clarifying on a lot of terminology and concepts around the charismatic gifts.

Spiritual Gifts has been helpful on so many levels.Firstly, *this* is my new bar for disagreeing well.Care and consideration has been taken to make sure this book is an accessible and loving address for myself and other continuationists choosing to read itSecondly, speaking as a continuationist, I would still strongly recommend this to anyone serious about understanding the spiritual gifts. We have to be open about the issues of our position this outlines that well, whilst engaging constructively in the conversation.Thirdly, though obviously incredibly intelligent, Dr. Schreiner seems to be primarily caught up with making sure this could be understood clearly by any party, whilst remaining theologically sturdy. Reminiscent of Lewis, Toplady and Sproul.

Thomas Schreiner ist Professor für Neues Testament und biblische Theologie am Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Er ist Autor zahlreicher Bibelkommentare und theologischer Werke, auch wenn leider noch keins davon ins deutsche Übersetzt wurde.In diesem Buch schreibt Thomas Schreiner über Geistesgaben. Er geht sehr grundlegend an das Thema heran, der Schwerpunkt des Buches ist allerdings die Darstellung der Position des Cecassionismus – die Überzeugung, dass bestimmte im Neuen Testament beschriebene Geistesgaben nach der Zeit der Apostel aufgehört haben zu existieren, vor allem Zungenrede und Prophetie. Diesen letztgenannten Gaben widmet Schreiner dementsprechend auch jeweils zwei Kapitel seines Buches.Spiritual Gifts ist in mehrer Hinsicht bemerkenswert: (1) Das Buch ist knapp gehalten und sehr verständlich geschrieben. (2) Schreiner schreibt nicht über Menschen und Positionen, mit denen er keinerlei Berührung hat. Das wird unter anderem darin sichtbar, dass er das Buch seinen Freunden Wayne Grudem, John Piper und Sam Storms widmete. Er schlägt einen versöhnlichen Ton an, auch wenn er klare Überzeugungen vertritt. (3) Schreiner vermeidet es, Argumente für seine Position heranzuziehen, die schwer haltbar sind. Das zeigt sich darin, dass er den „Unconvincing Arguments for Cecassion of the Gifts“ ein ganzes Kapitel widmet – hierin geht es im Besonderen um 1Kor 13 und die Behauptung das Vollkommene sei die Fertigstellung des biblischen Kanons.Spiritual Gifts ist ein gelungenes Buch, dass es verdient hat, von Lesern auf beiden Seiten gelesen zu werden – egal welche Position man vertritt. Cecassionisten kann es aufzeigen, wie man die eigene Position klar und demütig begründen kann. Kontinuisten können sich ein Bild von den Argumenten der Gegenseite machen, ohne dass sie sich Polemik ausgesetzt fühlen müssen.
