Question 1

These good quality boots come with poor quality laces that are too short and slip. Any recomendations for good non slip replacements?

I'm sorry your boots have such laces-my last pair came with adequate laces of a good length which I triple knot when tying, and which rarely come unhitched...  If I'm looking for other laces I go to a local cobblers and ask for advice.  Have you tried contacting Berghaus directly?  I know this isn't much help to you in your situation, and hope you find a satisfactory solution elsewhere.

How long will they last , stay waterproof ?

With regular cleaning and application of dubbin to keep the leather upper in good condition, they will stay waterproof as long as the boot has life!  Especially as they also have a Gore-Tex lining.  I've found I wear out the sole before the boot.

Question 3

Are they comfortable from the beginning? Do they need breaking in?

One boot did rub my heel causing a blister at the start, but no more than any other shoe. I put an extra sock on and within a few walks the boots fit perfectly. Im a size 8 and the boots are true to size. They are very comfortable, light compared to some boots, supportive and waterproof. I use them for walking up/down local hills, ramble across fields, woods etc. I don't 'hike' or mountain climb so can't give an opinion there. I walk sometimes up to 3 hours a day and I can say I am very pleased with them. The only negative I've found is that the laces are shinny which leads to them coming undone sometimes, but that is simply rectified and it does make them easy to untie. I am conscious my feet can look big being size 8 and walking boots are not going to help that, but these have a nice rounded toe and I don't feet 'big foot' in them. I've only had them a little over 6 months, used most days, doing well and should they last the test of time, my opinion at the moment is that I would certainly look for the same again. Hope this helps you decide.

The inside of my existing supalite boots is soft leather. Description here says inside is manmade. Is the interior around the foot soft leather?

No not soft leather its cushioned material lining with all leather outer. had to break them in but after a few weeks they softened to my feet and are fine now,.
