These lamps require an external ballast unit! RepTech HID metal halide lamps are ideal for use with reptiles due to the stable levels of UV produced. The aluminum housing reflects heat and light down, providing a perfect basking spot for reptiles. Although purchasing costs are higher than with mercury vapor lamps that have an internal ballast, HID lamps are much more accurate and stable and will run cheaper in the long run. The external ballast will last a life time and the UV output and heat production of the 70 watt lamp is comparable to the 160 watt mercury vapor lamp. Besides lower running cost, the UV output is much more stable and remains stable for 12 months or more. This technology is much improved compared to the internal ballasted mercury vapor lamps and should have the preference of serious hobbyist. These lamps will improve quality of life, color perception, feeding response and mating behavior for many reptiles. Suggested distances (about 200uW UVB output): 35 watt, 20-25cm 50 watt, 35-40cm 70 watt, 55-60cm Product is not suited for use with a thermostat. Frequently turning on and off of the lamp will break it. Due to the technology used these lamps are also not to be used with a dimmer. Always use a ceramic E27 socket for these type of lamps.
