I saw Patrick Allen at a IRA conference a couple years ago. Love his ideas in his book!! It takes the heart of reading and puts into an effective strategy to meet the needs of readers at all levels. Along with The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller I have changed the way I teach reading! Their approach of conferring with independent readers has helped guide non-readers to avid readers!! I LOVE these books!!

I'm a literacy coach and work with teachers K-5. I saw the author speak at the IRA conference and recently purchased the book. It simplifies conferring and shows that it is doable in any classroom for any age group. Very easy to read, very user friendly!

Love this book. It espouses everything I believe in, in terms of being an effective teacher. I downloaded it on my Kindle and found the charts and handwritten portions difficult to read. Then I downloaded the Kindle for Mac on my laptop. Now I can read everything and make it as big as I want! It's great. Thanks Amazon!

Allen has some excellent techniques for holding reading conferences with students. Although written about working with students in primary grades, the book's ideas about the conversations and record keeping can easily be adapted to secondary students.

Patrick Allen has taken conferring to a new depth and shares this information with the reader. My only disappointment in this item is that it completely fell apart on the first read. I was not even halfway through the book before chunks began to fall out. It is a real mess and cobbled up with tape, but the material is great!
