Michelangelo

This is one my best purchases in amazon since inception. Frankly speaking, I did not expect its size and quality.... It was far above my expectations....Packing was great as well with air bubble wrappers.

I found the book in very exciting and photography of each painting and sculptures was given in detail. Definitely must go for it

Michaelangelo scholar William E Wallace did a good job of introduction to the art of Michaelangelo in this book. But one must remember it is primarily targeted at beginners and intermediate level. While the front cover boldly claims The Complete coverage of sculptures, paintings and architectures, it's not one hundred percent true. Wallace did a decent job with the sculpture section and architectures, his coverage of paintings are not even adequate. Worst sufferer is the Sistine Chapel section. When you are dealing with a vast subject like Michaelangelo and number of pages are limited you should be very careful about the design and layout of the pages. But what we get in the Sistine Chapel section are full page quotations of different and famous art critics! On the other hand not all stories from old testament are covered either in picture or in text! There is nothing about prophets and the lunettes are not covered at all!On the plus side are big typefaces and the photos. Mostly printed in big sizes and some cases in full pages. Reproduction qualities are mostly satisfactory with the exception of Sistine Chapel section. Some of the reproductions are not colour calibrated and lack in details. It may be remembered that, the book itself is quite old. It was published originally in 1998. So, the printing quality bound to suffer as high quality photographic technology and high resolution scan were not available then. Unbelievable but also true is more information since been added to the creative output of Michaelangelo and in some cases they shed completely different light on some of his creations.So, if you are looking for an introduction to the art of Michaelangelo then it will suffice. But if you are an advanced student of Michaelangelo then you have to look elsewhere.
