The best of recent biographical Thomas books by far
I'd expected almost a coffee-table book, but found a serious yet very readable account of the poet's life and work. Richard Emeny clearly likes and understands Thomas in all his complexity and is extraordinarily knowledgeable. The pictures too were so enlightening - I was delighted to see for the first time photographs of Edward and Helen together looking like - well, a married couple. And photographs of Edward Thomas almost smiling. Both text and pictures place Thomas in his time and context in a remarkable way, with documents and letters that were new to me and I think to most Thomas enthusiasts. There is always more to learn about Thomas and while this book does not critique the poems, by giving such a convincing picture of the poet we can read his work again with fuller understanding. It's such a handsome volume too - a perfect present for others or for yourself and it will last.
