This is an outstanding Book for anyone serious about building a meaningful home. The author covers all the significant contributor to any home and in addition give a very interesting history about how each trade has developed. I thought the one on Charles Levitt was particularly interesting because it explained how we have moved from the master Craftsman to the poor homes in many developments today. Our fist home was a Fox & Jacob home in Dallas in the late 60s. It was a wonderful 'starter home' for us but it does not compare the the Timeless Home the author built for us 6 years ago. ARH

Sadly, a rant mostly
Rather than leading you through making good decisions about building the author rants against modern home building throughout all except the last two chapters. Sure we can appreciate his ire for its the reason we bought the book in the first place. I wish for solutions not a mind numbing reiteration of the problem. Tell us how to solve the problem.

Great info and insight
Great info and insight. A very enjoyable read with lots of info to send looking into history of building even more. This should be mandatory reading for any architectural student or future builder.

It is often a risk to choose a gift for an architect, but my husband resonates with the ideas of this book. He is delighted to discover contributions by some of his most respected colleagues.

Insightful. Slows you down to see beyond the latest fad and look to timelessness.

This publication is essentially an advertisement for the authors consulting and construction firm. Copying classic cabinetry and architectural details is nothing new. I also felt the author held a low esteem for those who choose to build on their own. I am a major proponent for the owner / build movement. In my 30 years of construction I have not been very impressed with the function of architects.
