How to Defend a Bridge Hand

Very important book to read

This is a very comprehensive treatment. If I were Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, I would probably understand and remember all its wisdom. I'm not, but I'm willing to settle for the 10% memory test and it will improve my game. Playing a defensive hand comprises 67% of my playing time, so I'll be returning to this text many times.

The author does a fine job of explaining the reasoning behind defense. He teaches you to always think before you make a play. I have not finished the book and already my play has improved. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to become a better defender and a better player.

Good basic info from a master!

Worth considering but I much prefer Goren.

Easy to read. I like this book because there are plenty of appropriate samples, and the author provided quizzes at each end of chapters.

ディフェンスはブリッジで最も難しい分野で、多くのプレーヤーが軽視している分野でもある。本書はディフェンスの基礎から応用まで非常に詳しく親切に解説してある画期的な一冊である。全体の構成は、1.Opening Leads2.Third-Hand Play3.Leads After Trick One4.Other Defensive Tactics5.Second Hand Play6.Attitude Signals7.Ciybt Sugnals and Suit-Prefefence Signals8.Defensive Trump Tricks9.Discarding and Deception各章にはそれぞれ８問ずつ練習問題が付いており、９章の後にさらに３６問の問題が載っている。解説もわかりやすい。また、最後に(Conventional Leads and Signals)という章を設けて特殊なリードやディフェンスの約束について解説してある。初級者から上級者までが楽しく学べるディフェンスの本で多くの人に薦めたい。なお、ディフェンスの問題集としてはEdwin.B.Kanter著の『Kanter for the Defense』（Wilshire Book Company)が上下２冊で２００問の問題について詳しく解説したものがあった。現在では入手困難のようだが、上級者向けの本が多い中で、多くの人に楽しめる良書であった。
