The brilliant Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher played the Montreux Jazz Festival on five occasions over a twenty year period, having appeared twice prior to that with his group Taste. The two DVDs here gather the crème de la crème from his appearances there between 1975 and 1985, as well as the complete 1994 gig, while the CD features highlights from the first four (1975-85). Together they offer another great opportunity to experience Gallagher in his natural habitat. Rory was rightly famed for the virtuosity of his live performances and this definitive Montreux collection captures him at his very best. Whether playing his trusty Stratocaster, a variety of acoustic guitars or even wielding an electric sitar (as he does with great skill on the blistering Philby from 1985), Rory delivers one compelling performance after another. Throughout his three decades in music, the modest and charismatic Irishman toured relentlessly and always appeared in his element on stage. In fact, he was adamant that his concert recordings best captured the raw energy he exuded, whether covering the Chicago blues classic Messin' With The Kid originally by Junior Wells or the Stax soul standard I Take What I Want a mod favourite by Sam & Dave or performing original compositions like the ebullient Tattoo'd Lady or the barnstorming Laundromat.

Rory live across the decades.
excellent triple disc, initially thought it was 3 cd's,however its 2 dvd's and 1 cd,still it was bought at a decent price,a bargain in fact.the music is compiled from various gigs from Montreux from 1975 thru to 1994.The cd contains selections from '75,'77.'79 &'85 as does the ist dvd, however dvd 2 has a complete gig from '94.As such the audio and picture quality vary but such is the playing from Rory it matter not,his scorching guitar runs, wonderful acoustic interludes are a joy to listen to (and watch) Sadly the dvd footage also shows his ailing health taking its toll. The great man passed in 1995 and his loss is still felt,do yourself a favour and pick this up and relive and enjoy a special talent sadly missed.

Outstanding
There's very little that can be said about Rory Gallagher's live performances that hasn't been written many times before. The stage was his natural environment, and it shows through in this really outstanding collection. Comments have also been made about the 1994 gig, where there's no doubt he's physically beginning to show signs of premature ageing. Whilst that is true, I have to say it doesn't seem to have affected his playing. His performances of Continental Op, Tattoo'd Lady, Ghost Blues and Messin' with the Kid in particular are simply breathtaking, and rival pretty much anything else he's done, even the legendary '74 Irish Tour. I never saw Gallagher live - one of my big regrets - but seeing these performances goes a long way to making up for that.

Wow!
I am a fairly new convert to Rory Gallagher as in the 70's & 80's I did not have much of an appreciation for this style of guitar blues.Since my conversion I feel that this bloke is a true master and sadly underrated by many. This man is another example of Live outshining Studio as he feeds off the audience,

Rory's guitar playing continues to improve.
Excellent album (look out for copy with 2 DVD). His guitar playing improves with every album.
