All Squidward wants is a nice, clarinet-playing life, but in this collection of seven side-splitting Squidward-centred episodes, he’ll get anything but relaxation as he places a restraining order on SpongeBob, shares a locker with him, gets trapped in a time capsule, and endures so many more misfortunes in this epic underwater collection. Aber trotzdem ich liebe dich, Thaddäus Tentakel.
This DVD contains episodes primarily from Season 7, a rather weak season with still a few strong episodes which I will touch upon.A few episodes I have been wary enough to avoid since they seem mediocre enough to not be worth my attention, including 'Restraining Spongebob' (which we all know won't end well), and 'Barnacle Face', which seems like another poor imitation of 'The Ren and Stimpy Show's later, similarly mediocre series.Still, there are a couple of solid episodes. I decided to watch them both in German since I am very fond of the dub. In Germany, the eponymous octopus is voiced by the late Eberhard Prüter. While Prüter didn't quite have as clever dialogue delivery as the English voice actor, Rodger Bumpass, he still managed to hold up a very solid performance throughout the show. And while his voice was ever waning particularly in 'Squidward in Clarinetland', he still delivered with a lot of conviction and a surprising amount of energy at times. His performance was similarly very solid in 'Enchanted Tiki Dreams' (Thaddäus im Tiki Land). He had a few pleasantly calm and quiet moments when he wasn't expressing his character's range, and the striking scene in which poor Thaddel is curled up on the chair and moaning about how he's never able to get any peace is delivered with brilliant amounts of emotion. As for Rodger Bumpass himself, he's still going strong and giving the performance everything he has, but the voice for Squidward has exaggerated over the years and now comes off as much more emphatic and throaty. Still good, though.Santiago Ziesmer's performance as Spongebob is a no-brainer. He still delivers with just as much energy and conviction as he did at the start of the series.Unlike Rodger Bumpass, Tom Kenny, the English voice of Spongebob, has gone back to how he originally sounded, a sign of the series' struggle back into the quality of the pre-movie episodes. All in all, a mixed bag of episodes, but held up by solid voice work in both languages.
