THE DUKE

I have just about everything Jackson has recorded and was looking forward to the album, which boasted taking Duke Elllington standards and adding Joe Jackson's unique interpretation. He does that with mixed success. At times the album fulfills potential but at other times it drags on a bit. And this from a Jackson fan!I saw Joe at Cadogan Hall recently and the album is best served live by Jackson's very capable band but not as impressive on CD.Joe Jackson should have been much more successful than he was, his writing is top notch at times. But it was ambitious projects like Jumpin' Jive, Night Music and Will Power that possibly confused his audience reducing it to the absolutely committed. I am afraid anyone hearing The Duke as Jackson's first work would be turned off before attempting the very impressive back catalogue.

This album is just brilliant. It hooked me on the first play and it just grows and grows.Do you have to be a Joe Jackson fan? Well, probably not, as the album's style is a completely modern take that shares roots with much of his output but doesn't fit closely to it either.Having said that, if you are expecting something along the lines of Jumpin' Jive, you will probably enjoy this. That doesn't mean it is a repeat show of that album but with another composer - Duke goes in another direction altogether and is a complete re-interpretation of Ellington's music rather than the pastiche evident in Jumpin' Jive.The musicianship is inspired, and to make it even better, the sound quality of the recordings is exceptional. Crank it up! Thoroughly recommended.

This was ordered with a degree of caution-but Mr Jackson has again delivered an excellent piece of musical brilliance. I appreciate this may be a bit specialised for some peoples taste-but it is very well done and a very welcome addition to the collection.

I love the music of Duke Ellington and am a Joe Jackson fan but so far found this disappointing. It's just a little bland. Stick with the jumping jive covers

In nostro eroe infatti, reinterpreta il repertorio del leggendario jazzista in maniera del tutto inedita, attraverso una varietà sorprendente di ritmi e sfumature sonore."Un'operazione ambiziosa, per la quale Jackson ha mobilitato un supercast di musicisti, tra i quali la violinista Regina Carter, il bassista Christian McBride, il funambolo Steve Vai alle chitarre, Questlove e altri membri dei Roots, la cantante iraniana Sussan Deyhim, la diva r'n'b Sharon Jones e la vocalist brasiliana Lilian Vieira (Zuco 103), oltre a suoi collaboratori di vecchia data, come il chitarrista Vinnie Zummo e il percussionista Sue Hadjopoulos, e "niente poco di meno che" Iggy Pop, che duetta con lui in "It Don't Mean A Thing (If You Ain't Got That Swing)" (da Onda rock)Un album da avere in vinile nella vostra collezione.

A distanza di un anno appena dall'album Live Music, Joe Jackson tira fuori dal suo cilindro un nuovo disco.Se nel precedente lavoro, con una formazione essenziale in trio, aveva rispolverato alcuni dei suoi cavalli di battaglia e interpretato alcune cover rock e pop (David Bowie, Ian Dury, ecc...) sintetizzandone l'essenza e facendole proprie rielaborandole in chiave quasi jazz (direi "jacksonizzandole" a suo modo), stavolta potremmo dire che assistiamo al processo inverso.Joe interpreta con la collaborazione di vari noti artisti, come Iggy Pop, Regina Carter, Sharon Jones, Steve Vai, Vinnie Zummo, alcune fra le più note pagine di Duke Ellington attualizzandole ma non stravolgendole, in modo da ottenere un amalgama equilibrato fra l'essenza jazz e l'interpretazione rock/pop o addirittura etnica.A dire il vero si tratta di un progetto che bolliva in pentola da un po' di tempo, in quanto chi scrive almeno 3-4 anni orsono assistette ad un concerto dal vivo durante il quale il Nostro interpretò appunto un paio di cover ellingtoniane anche se per piano solo.L'album si apre con Isfahan che nel suo incedere ricorda la Loisaida di Body And Soul, altro suo capolavoro datato 1984 - procuratevelo, se potete nell'edizione originale poiché quella 'rimasterizzata' nel 1997 è un pasticcio - poi quando entra la chitarra di Steve Vai inizia, ma con delicatezza, il processo di "metallizzazione" del Duke.Direi che i pezzi sono tutti degni di nota, in Caravan è la chitarra elettrica di Vinnie Zummo a disegnarne il motivo accompagnato dal canto in lingua farsi di Sussan Deyhim, irresistibile è il medley I'm Beginning To See The Lights/Take The A Train/Cotton Tail, segue Mood Indigo cantata direttamente da Joe, una interessante Perdido in chiave samba interpretata in portoghese dalla voce femminile di Lilion Vieira mixata a Satin Doll, una The Moochie anch'essa metallizzata e per chiudere lo standard It Don't Mean a Thing rivisto secondo i canoni dell'acid jazz (lo hanno suonato praticamente tutti, anche i gatti: provare per credere, se andate su amazon.com troverete almeno 1000 versioni, ci mancava ormai solo quella di J J!).La registrazione è - potevamo dubitarlo conoscendo il perfezionismo di Joe? - accuratissima.Probabilmente resterà un divertissement, nel senso che non ritengo inaugurerà un filone jazzy (peraltro già intrapreso con destrezza in Jumpin' Jive nel lontano 1981), anche se si tratta di un'opera di notevole spessore. Ci vuole coraggio in partenza, competenza e maestria nella padronanza dei generi musicali, cosa che Joe ha sinora costantemente dimostrato di possedere.Assolutamente da non perdere per chi ha seguito da sempre Joe Jackson, come chi scrive, ma mi sentirei di consigliarlo anche ai puristi del jazz che, accantonando una iniziale diffidenza verso certe operazioni, potrebbero cominciare a scoprire uno dei compositori contemporanei più versatili ed intelligenti.

Jackson bewundert Ellington und zeigt wie dieser keine Scheu vor großen Namen, wenngleich Respekt.Jackson imitiert die Werke Ellingtons auch nicht, er erarbeitet sie neu, entfacht ihren zeitlosen Geist, haucht ihnen elegante, neuzeitliche Frische ein. Dazu lud der Künstler eine Reihe namhafter Kollegen ins Studio, wie beispielsweise Iggy Pop, Sussan Deyhim, Regina Carter und viele mehr. Konsequent verzichter Jackson in den Stücken auf Bläser. Mit dem selbst auferlegten Diktat befreit er sich, ist in der Lage eigene Akzente zu setzen, um seinen Stil einzubringen und den persönlichen Duktus zu setzen.So ist das Album mehr als ein Transfer der Musik des Duke in das neue Jahrtausend. Das Album strahlt selbst in den sehr ruhigen Stücken Charme aus, wirkt ungemein filigran, um in Tracks wie „Rockin'In Rhythm“ mit Ahmir Thompson bunt, funkig, ja schon feurig echte Freude an und Liebe zur Musik zu zeigen. Musikalisch und klangtechnisch ein hervorragendes Album, das in guten Sammlungen nicht fehlen sollte. Für Jackson-Fans ist es Pflicht. Joe Jackson interprets Duke Ellington with help from people such as Regina Carter, Steve Vai & Iggy Pop. It has a free wheeling kind of feel to it but somehow manages to keep the faith with the original music. If you're an Ellington purist it may not be your cup of tea. If you're looking for a reprise of Jackson's Jumpin' Jive album you won't get that here either. But if you want a well arranged, well played set of songs that'll grow on you with every listen then this disc is the ticket. Jackson always surprises and seldom disappoints.

Si poteva migliorare l'immenso lavoro del maestro Duke Ellington?Forse no ma il remake del grande Joe Jackson, anche in virtù della tecnologia attuale che enfatizza la qualità sonora del supporto, è assolutamente su livelli siderali.Dopo quasi un anno dalla sua uscita e ad un prezzo dimezzato mi sono deciso di portarmi a casa questo grande disco (che comunque avevo già ascoltato).Dopo il primo passaggio sul mio impianto domestico (di una certa qualità) mi sono amaramente pentito di non aver anticipato l'acquisto sin dalla sua uscita.Acquistato sul Marketplace dalla ditta Marvelio, tempi di consegna biblici a parte (comunque comunicati e rispettati), tutto bene.

Joe rarely produces a bad disc and this is no exception. Every track is great. Joe's playing is superb as are the guest vocals. May have to buy another copy. My wife took it to her car and I am just glad that I downloaded it to my IPod. this album is a real gem.

Y'a pas Duke reste mon compositeur de jazz préféré, j'ai plein, plein de ses disques, en plus, il avait de fabuleux musiciens...Beaucoup de gens ont repris la musique du Duke, avec plus ou moins (plus souvent avec moins) de bonheur... Monk a réussi, d'autres jazzmen également... mais qu'un ptit gars comme Joe s'y mette... cela pouvait amener un doute...On pouvais lui faire confiance, coté musico, il sait jouer, a du gout et sait ce que c'est que de composer et d'arranger, restait à confronter tout cela avec Mr Duke..Et bien pari réussi : non seulement le texte est bien respecté, mais ses interprétations sont plus qu'intéressantes et nous démontrent son excellente connaissance de l'univers de Duke. C'est une réelle surprise car je savais qu'il pouvait manier la plume classique, le jazz disons swing, le rock (of course), mais de la à se frotter à la composition de jazz de Duke...Les musiciens sont vraiment à la hauteur et le disque est vraiment original dans son traitement... pour moi, je pense que Duke doit apprécier...

Artista mai banale che esplora vari generi musicali riuscendo sempre a stupire con pregevoli risultati.Questo disco, rivisitazione di classici jazz di Duke Ellington, stupisce per i risultati ottenuti pur senza l'utilizzo di fiati. Bellissimo

Not to everyone's taste but I love both Joe Jackson and the Duke. This is a creative interpretation of Ellington's work. Maybe it doesn't always hit the mark but Ellington was nothing if not creative. I think he would approve.

das oft verkannte geniale Klangchamäleon. International sehr bekannt und trotzdem gleichzeitig auch ein Geheimtipp. Grossartige Interpretationen oft bekannter Titel, und auch seine Eigenkompositionen überzeugen immer wieder und laden zum oftmaligen Hören ein.Tipp: Das Rockpalast-Live Album, und alle seiner Produktionen der letzten 30 Jahre!

Für mich eines der Konzeptalben des Jahres. Erfrischende Interpretationen altbekannter Jazz-Standards. Ich mag Ellington und ich mag JJ, z.B. Night and Day, Body and Soul. Was lag da näher, als sich dieses Album zu gönnen ?! Ganz stark das Abschlussstück mit Iggy Pop. Die Sahne oben drauf ist, das Album ist in exquisiter Qualität aufgenommen ! Falls Sie ein paar neue LAutsprecher bei Ihrem Händler testen wollen, empfehle ich Ihnen, diese Scheibe mitzunehmen! Sie stellt höchste Ansprüche an die Anlage!

Un signor artista che non mi fa impazzire in questo CD. Veramente bello il pezzo affidato all'Iguana. Se vi piace JJ dovete comperarlo

Est-ce du jazz ou de la pop ? Peu importe. Le talent de Joe Jackson a été de faire des arrangements très moderne sur la musique de ce génie qu'était Duke Ellington. De plus, Joe Jackson aux claviers et chant a su s'entourer d'invités exceptionnels tels que Régina Carter (violon), Sussan Deyhim (chant), Sue Hadjopoulos (congas), Sharon Jones (chant), Christian McBride (contrebasse), Iggy Pop (chant), Ahmir'?Uest Love' Thompson (batterie), Steve Vai (guitare), Zuco 103 (chant, batterie, percussions), Vinnie Zummo (guitares). Un immense album qu'il faut impérativement avoir dans toutes les discothèques.

I enjoyed a few tracks. I found other of the tracks abrasive. The images of Joe Jackson in the booklet are a little off putting as well.The sound quality is excellent.
