Absolutely Incredible
Sarah Kane not only strove to change the way we see theatre but also to change it's possibilities. Part of the "In-Yer-Face" Theatre movement, Kane's plays deal with sexuality, violence, abuse and insanity. As such, and as "In-Yer-Face" might imply, reading her plays might be looked at as an experience, rather than a play. The intimacy of Crave is really what makes it so ground-breaking. To those who are new to Sarah Kane, Crave is about four "faceless" letters, (A,M,B,C)Who share a sort of "stream of conciousness" dialogue, better read as poetry. The beauty of the words disguises the malice, the rage, and often the rawness beneath. A lot of the words can be traced back to Kane's favourite poems, and songs. For example, "HURRY UP PLEASE, IT'S TIME" can be traced to T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland".What Kane did so marvolously and - fearlessly - is change the confines of traditional theatre. After watching a Kane play, or reading one, I guarentee that you'll never be the same again. Reading Kane is like stepping into the head of a schizophrenic - especially 'Crave'. Several - seemingly detatched - conversations which blend together to create a story; what Crave is is a puzzle for the audience - and if done correctly, or read correctly, each person will interpret her words as something completely different; here is the crux. Kane is therefore open to many possibilities for staging and design and the way actors deliver their lines.I repeat, you'll never be the same after reading Kane. She's not easy to detatch yourself from, having a strange addiction of her own. I studied her at A-Level and I'd find myself awake at night, thinking about the possibilities and the intricate relationships in the plot; this made her final play "4.48 psychosis" have a brand new meaning for me; you don't so much as read/ perform Sarah Kane as live her. Such intensity, such rawness.Incredible, thought provoking, strangely beautiful as much as it is disgusting; 'Crave' will have you questioning your own insanity as much as the "realness" of the 'actors' infront of you.

it takes a lot of studying to figure out this play. its hard work and a challenge for those whom are wanting to stage the piece. however it is full of possibilities, a favourite amongst students.

Beautiful work
This evocative read is a flood of Sarah Kane's emotions on paper. She has been very inspirational to many modern actors with her juxtaposed writing. As an audience we are unsure whether the actors are talking to themselves or each other as the text jumps from moments of speech. A must for any theatregoer and actor.
