Absolute MUST READ
The story gets not your heart and stays there. I find myself thinking about the “you will only know it is haunted, afterwards” theme, in so many situations in my own life (not ghosty, though.)Witty, wry, beautifully observed and mournful.. just perfect.

Great Christmas Ghost Short Story.
Wow. What is packed inside a short story sometimes surprises me. Loved this short story. Will of course share with family and friends.

How Well Do You Know Your Spouse?
*Spoilers**Spoilers*This is a short story that can be read in one sitting, preferably on a dark, winter evening. It's about a young American couple who have struck it rich from a mine and are finally able to buy their dream house in England. It's told in flashback as the wife recalls events leading up to her husband's mysterious disappearance.Besides the obvious horror of the ghost story, I thought Wharton was underscoring how little the wife knew her husband. His ill-gotten gains in business and his wife's lack of knowledge of his affairs probably occurs frequently with couples then and now.I enjoyed the story, but I would have left the ghost's existence ambiguous. It could've been the husband's guilty conscience at work rather than the supernatural.

Double-feint
The house has a ghost, but you won't know it until later. Those were the words given to the new owners of a seemingly ideal little manor. Husband and wife are entirely eager to see this ghost, but fail to find any evidence. Until a stranger comes calling and old business threatens their livelihood.I was entirely expecting more of a twist, here. Instead, the ghost winds up being exactly whom you suspect, which is, honestly, so often not the case with a mystery. I actually feel a bit foolish.Available as a free audio production from Tales to Terrify.

I just can't finish it, but not for lack of trying.
I made what is probably the fifth false start on this one. I've tried reading it several times over the last few months. I just can't finish the thing. It starts out with a great premise, a newly rich couple is looking to get back to basics in the English countryside. They want a house with all of the INconveniences including a ghost. They find what they want though the ghost is just a bit passive for their taste. Then the story ... starts... to... drag... and... drag.I just can't finish it, but not for lack of trying.1 STAR

Spooky great
Edith Warton's books are personal favorites of mine. I have read a lot of her books but, this little one holds a place in my heart. I am a fan of supernatural stuff (in any way or form) and this short story holds dear to both my fanatism for Edith's works and spooky stuff. Read it for yourself, you won't be sorry.
