ROCKLER29190 Clamp-It Assembly Square Tool

The 8" x 8" x 1 1/2" Rockler Assembly Squares were the next size larger than what I had intended. However, after using them, I am glad for this size, as well as buying two. My application is building model buildings (for model RR). I have used traditional hobby-size "Squares" for this purpose. While I could get a 90-degree joint when gluing, say, two walls together, they would sometimes fall out of plumb. With the Rockler Squares, the 1 1/2 inch depth gives more of a vertical surface to keep the joint plumb. Plus, by using two of them (with the corner nestled between) gives a firmer pressure. I used a small spring-loaded c-clamp to gently hold the Rockler's together. One other nice feature is that there is a small "indent" on the inside corner. So, any glue that weeps out of the corner joint does not get unintentially glued onto the Rockler.By the way, the Rockler clamp is rigid and well-constructed. Get two of them .

These are very good for quick clamping when pocket joining etc. The final square check is done with a tape measure or other accepted methods, these are for ASSEMBLY not as a precision tool. If you are expecting precise square for $6.50 get real and stop whining.Aside from that the Swanson square which I also own and use every few minutes cannot be clamped easily and quickly.For standard cabinetry the cost of the Woodpecker compared to gain is not seen as the final square check of the product will not be done with a 12" square anyway even if you precisely clamped all the individual parts.The only issue I have is the chamfered corner, it makes it very hard to line the square with my measurement. In addition I wish there was a less bulky method for clamping unclamping than using quick clamps.Overall as a carpenter who does joinery on my own all the time they enable me to work by myself and save considerable time and money.

This clamp up square is useful for assembly and gluing. It's plastic and has some flex, it's not good for forcing something into place. It has several clamping possibilities which are nice to have, particularly using the special Rockler clamps. Complaints about the piece not being perfectly square are correct. It's good enough for most glue-ups, but I improved it by carefully sanding it on a perfectly flat piece of 1/4 plate glass. 180 grit self adhesive sandpaper did the trick without much effort. When lapping the square, it's obvious what the problem is: there is flashing, uneven shrinkage as the plastic is molded and the 2 halves of the die didn't line up very well. I did not try to sand it completely flat- just enough to take down the high spots and make it check square against a combination square. I ignored the dimples and small low spots. I lapped all 4 surfaces.

I bought the angle clamping jig thinking this came with it. The jig was useless without this right angle piece. I actually use this thing constantly without the jig because it is large yet not cumbersome like my carpenter square. Use it to set 90 degrees on all things just about so I bought a second one.

These are well made from rigid injection molded plastic. According to my Starrett Square the insides are dead on; but the outsides are between 1mm to 2mm out over 200mm. A .5% to 1% error isn't that big a deal but is inexcusable with injection molded plastic. Should be easy to fix with some judicious sanding. Both sides of the squares are flat across the narrow part.BTW Rockler has these on sale for $5.99. 5/11/'10.

A really simple tool, one that you'd think would be more commonplace. I honestly just use it as a square because it's nice and thick, allows me to set it down in angles and stays upright. Pricey, but I don't suppose it will wear out anytime soon

I have about a dozen of these, large and small.They're great for assembly (small to medium projects like jewelry boxes to medium size cabinets). Complaints that they're not square to 0.005 degrees miss the point. They're assembly squares.Stiff and plenty square.Just a bit pricey.

I have to say, the only real reason I bought this item was for its price. Now that I have it, I can't believe how useful it is. I seem to be using it all the time when I am glueing things up that need to be at 90 degrees. I can clamp it to the workpiece to support an item while tightening pocket hole screws, I can clamp it flat to a table to make a true 90 degree area to join up two pieces of wood. I have 4 of these and I have to say that I am really supprised how often I use them. Great buy.
