Product Description Fun-packed adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli stories. After being abandoned as a child, young Mowgli (voiced by Bruce Reitherman) is brought up in the jungle by wolves. However, when the news arrives that murderous, man-hating tiger Shere Khan (George Sanders) has returned, Mowgli's friends Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot) and Baloo (Phil Harris) set out to return the reluctant mancub to the humans' village. Their task is not made any easier when Mowgli is kidnapped at the behest of monkey ruler King Louie (Louis Prima), who wishes to learn the secret of man's power - fire! Disney Studios' nineteenth animated feature was the last to be overseen by founder Walt before his death, and won an Academy Award nomination for the song 'Bare Necessities'. .co.uk Review One of the very best animated films that the Walt Disney Studio has ever released (and the last to be produced by Walt Disney himself), and as downright brilliant as it was on its debut in 1967, The Jungle Book makes a very welcome return to DVD in this excellent 40th anniversary double-disc set. Based loosely on the Rudyard Kiplings book of the same name, the film tells the story of man-cub Mowgli, and the friends he makes in the jungle. And its these friends who ignite the film, with some of the most memorable characters and songs that Disney has ever put on the screen. Kings of The Jungle Book are the likes of Baloo the Bear, King Louie the villainous Shere Khan the Tiger, while supporting characters such as Colonel Hathi are just as memorable. Its astonishing that it packs so much and so many into its relatively short running time. Its an amazing achievement too that The Jungle Book bristles with such energy and fun, and that its just as likely to enthral the current generation of youngsters as well as those of us who saw it first time round. And when those songs start playing--from Bare Necessities through to I Wanna Be Like You--it'll take some effort to not start tapping your feet. A brilliant, brilliant film, and as vintage as the Disney back catalogue gets. --Simon Brew

Better than the book!
Walt Disney has given us so much over the last hundred years (well, not quite...but getting there!), some of it wonderful and some - particularly of late - distinctly mediocre (though Ratatouille is a triumph).Everyone has their favourite Disney film - his own was apparently Bambi - but I'm sure a great many of us would pick this one. It was the first film I was ever taken to see at a cinema, so for me there's no contest. Its influence extends to this day - just the other month I bought a Louis Prima CD set, memories of his towering performance as the voice of Orang-Utang King Louie burned forever into my memory. And as for The Bear Necessities, they play it in clubs nowadays...and it fills the dancefloor!Indeed, despite Disney often being accused of cheapening or Americanising children's classics (and none of us who live in London will ever quite forgive Dick Van Dyke's accent in Mary Poppins), this film stands up a whole lot better than the book which inspired it, Kipling having been neither even a tad politically correct nor an instinctive children's writer. In some ways, however, the film echoes the sixties in which it was made: the vultures are clearly based on The Beatles and a couple have reasonable Scouse accents. One sounds like Stanley Holloway in My Fair Lady, but there you go - at least it's not Dick Van Dyke! And now those Vultures will be joined by a new character - a rhino Uncle Walt didn't like at the audition. It may be a gimmick but I'm a little bit intrigued. Aren't you?A marvellous film for kids and adults alike - and what a Christmas present!

Perfect!
This movie is just great! I loved it as a child and I still do.The colours on this Blu-ray are nice and vivid. The picture fills out the entire screen and there's not one spec of dirt on the screen throughout that could show its age. Each frame of this movie is crystal clear and looks like it could have been made yesterday. They should make more cartoon movies nowadays instead of everything being CGI.This steelbook looks fantastic and is probably the nicest steelbook in my collection. The colours are nice and vibrant and the bevelled design on the front is a nice touch. Some people have complained that the back is too plain but I like how the back has a green, darkened ambient scene of the jungle. It might have looked a bit over the top with more vibrant artwork on the back. The inside is fantastic, it displays a beautiful scene of Mogli floating on the water and when you lift the disc it then shows Baloo floating on the water also.I think it would have been nice if they also used artwork on the disc itself, instead of a plain blue colour with the title. The special features are also fantastic.I recommend this steelbook. 10/10.

Overdose of Editions...
Is it just me or is anyone else completely baffled by the number of versions or "Editions" of this movie. I want to buy the DVD but I am completely confused about which one to buy.First there is the normal "Jungle Book", then there is "Deluxe Edition"... also a "40th Anniversary Edition" ... and then a "Platinum Edition" although this may be the same as the 40th Anniversary edition. To top it all, I have also come across a "Special Edition".Does anyone have an idea what the difference is between all these versions and which one is the best to buy ?(Please ignore the star rating. I gave it so as not to influence the overall star rating by this query)
