What an intriguing book. A definite critique on parenting, and an interesting take on modern Life as a family. Is Bernard the monster? Did the monster actually eat Bernard? Is that just how Bernard's parents view him?

Loved as a kid and still love it as a father now.

A wonderful book of parents who did not appreciate or take notices of their child.

who would know you can still purchase this book. Read it to our kids and now buying for our grandkids. Not the traditional bedtime story. :)

Childhood favorite. Kids not born yet but I'm sure happy reading this! :)

Cute book

I found this book while living in England, and I read it to my son. He loved it! It has just the right kind of dark humor that children love. He had me read it to him over and over again.

Sooooo.... I read a lot of reviews before leaving mine because I wanted just to see how others feel.. I read this as a kid and it was one of my faves.. so I brought it for my 7 year old and 2 and a half year old.. as soon as it arrived we sat and read it together.. they really enjoyed it with both of them wanting it read again. However my 7 year old said "so that's it? Bernard doesn't come back?" I think she expected a "happier" ending. But it actually led to us having actually a lovely chat about gratitude and about how for so many children around the world this book is a reality (aside from the monster!) In just how many children are ignored and not cared for. There is a girl in my daughters class who can be unkind, my daughter says she smells bad and often comes to class without having had breakfast, it helped her have more sympathy for that little girls home life, and perhaps she is ignored very similar to Bernard. She said now I understand why she can be mean sometimes. Obviously I appreciate everyone's parenting style is different. For our family this book is great, for others maybe not! And it definitely made us want to never ignore each other but always be kind and loving! Plus the girls find the monster hilarious, especially when he goes up the stairs to bed all obediently and yet confused!!! We love it but I get it isn't for everyone.

A wonderful book that doesn't mince words (or pictures) to tell you the importance of paying attention to your child. It may be over 35 years old, but it is still relevant in today's busy lives. A much-needed reality check for parents.
