AN OUTSTANDING BOOK
I have read many Finnish history books regarding the Winter War. This book presents the Soviet Air Force (VVS) with detailed information with data and pictures obtained in Russian files. What is really wonderful is that the author contrasted the information obtained in Russia with Finnish files, so the book is really well-balanced. I learned that the VVS used almost obsolete aircraft, very poorly trained pilots and crews, who very prone to accidents and getting lost, with no accuracy in bombing missions. Many VVS commanders were arrested and executed because of that. On the contrary, the Suomen Ilmavoimat had very well trained crews who could shot down more than 300 Soviet planes in dogfights. Another 300 Russian planes were shot down by AA fire. The Ilmavoimat only lost 62 aircraft in total. The VVS could never get air superiority during the Winter War (and not even in the Continuation War). Lots of very interesting (and unpublished before) pictures and excellent color aircraft profiles. If you are interested in the Winter War, this book is a MUST!!!
