Chieftain Whistles Optima Tenor D Whistle - silver

I've only had a soprano whistle for a couple of months, but I'd been looking around online at these low whistles and after a bit of research I decided to plump for this one; it's not the cheapest low D whistle on the market, but you can admittedly pay a lot more.The whistle's tone is mellow and somewhat breathy, especially in the lower register. As you may have read if you've researched the low whistle, it requires some adaptation of technique, and I'm still in the process of getting to grips with the piper's grip, as it were. It's an enjoyable process though, and rewarding when you start to coax a tune out of those hard-to-reach low notes. (n.b. I'd recommend Phil Hardy's youtube channel for some demonstrations of low whistle technique, some of which feature this very whistle- highly informative for the novice!)The removable head joint means that this whistle can be tuned somewhat to play in tune with other instruments, which I've not done so far, but seems a useful feature.The low octave is rather quiet, with successively higher notes becoming louder as you blow more air through the instrument, which seems to be a feature/limitation of all instruments of this type, although I understand some are louder than others. This isn't likely to be a problem for myself, as I plan to mainly use this in home recordings once I become more proficient, but it might be a point to consider for those who want to stand out in an unamplified jam session.Overall, after a day or 2 I'm pleased with my purchase, and looking forward to improving my playing. Would love it to have cost a bit less though! (now watch me spend £200 on my next one)
