Missed Oportunity
If these are all facts about Rommel, then this was an excellent movie. Hitler never suffered the fate that he should have while he was still live, but eternal death will have to suffice.

Rommel's last year.
Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, was a Field Marshal in the German army who did his best to win the war for Germany and failed. This excellent German film tells his story and it feels like the producers and director did their best to accurately portray Rommel and still be entertaining. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the film, but I can say that I was genuinely entertained by Rommel's sad story. The film has German subtitles and this was a problem for my wife, who complained that it was difficult to keep up with the fast paced dialogue. I am a fast reader and I must admit that sometimes I didn't get everything that was said. For me that problem was less important than the quality of the production and acting in this film, both outstanding. Also, the filmmakers from time to time use actual war footage, which is impressive.Rommel is not a documentary, but the director's version of Rommel's last year of life. I am certain historians will not be happy with the liberties the director has taken in portraying Rommel and the events that ended his life. The purpose of the film is to show that Rommel is a true hero of the German people who remained true to a lost cause. It appears that even his enemies respected Rommel the man, who was clearly on the wrong side. Rommel learned too late the mistake he had made and it killed him.

Good movie. But there's a problem
Good movie. But there's a problem. When the West was sponsoring German rearmament to counter the Soviet bloc, there was an understandable inclination to glamorize the July Conspirators both to set them up as positive role models for Germans and to make German rearmament more palatable to the former Allies. Unfortunately, as far as I know no decent history of the conspiracy has ever been written. I suspect that what would emerge is that the conspirators were a very mixed bag, with a common desire to see Hitler dead or at least removed from power, but without necessarily being in agreement about much else. Did some what to end the war? Sure, I'm sure of that, but I doubt they all did. Some may have thought that with him out of the way Germany could do a better job of fighting. Were some revulsed by the Holocaust? Sure, some were. But again I doubt this was an important motive for them all. Did they have any common vision of how what kind of government should replace the Nazi regime or what a future Germany ought to look like? I doubt that very much. Probably some conspirators were deeply concerned about questions l ike that, but I bet some didn't give it a moment's thought. If I'm right about these hunches, then what we have here is a kind of comic book-level oversimplication of a very complex historical incident. The same could be said about the more recent American movie "Valkyrie." If I'm right about these hunches, then there's still room for a more nuanced and intellectually sophisticated movie about the event that I'd find a lot more interesting.

Clean Wehrmacht propaganda
Rommel was well aware of the Holocaust. He worked with Walter Rauff, inventor of the gas van, building over 30 concentration camps in North Africa, using Jewish slave labor. More than 2500 Jews died in those camps. On July 20, 1942, Rommel ordered Rauff to prepare to kill all the Jews of Palestine, once Germany conquered it. He also allowed his men to sack Jewish ghettos in Tunis and Susse. The man was a Nazi. He was also not involved in the July 20 plot at all, although other Nazis were. Arthur Nebe, commander of Einsatzgruppe B, who organized mass killings of Jews in Poland in 1941, and Georg von Boeselager, an innovator in Nazi "anti-partisan" operations, were serious war criminals. Saving the Jews was not a high priority for the plotters.

... accurate account of these events you will be really disappointed. There are to many to explain but I ...
The movie itself is well done but if you are looking for a historically accurate account of these events you will be really disappointed. There are to many to explain but I will mention the more glaring ones1. Rommel was actually injured in the fighter attack that was depicted in the beginning of the film instead of him walking away without a scratch2. When the allies launched Dday, it's shows how the German commanders are confidant of the situation and that they have an idea of how many troops the allies were landing. The reality is that these believed these were isolated raids and were so confused of where the attacks were coming from. Very few in the German high command thought "this is it" or the actual invasion was taking place not until at least 3 days after June 6.3. Hitler was not in France during the invasion. He was in his alpine retreat in Bavaria and did not have a headquarters in France nor did ever go back to France after the infamous footage of him in walking infront of the Eiffel Tower.4. The biggest one for me is the actor playing ROMMEL. I understand the actor doesn't need to be his clone but there is zero resemblance . I stopped watching the movie because I had no connection to this actor being connected to ROMMEL. ROMMEl was reported to be 5' 6" . This actor was probably 6'2" Plus. This actor also was to elegant and Nobel for Rommel. Rommel was gruff and scrawny in apperence. There were some accurate depictions such as Rommel desire to have all armor and tanks on the beach and to propel the invasion instead of having his forces in reserve for a counter attack as his superiors wanted. I have studied, read, and toured almost every site of the battle of Normandy so excuse me for being so picky. Entertaining movie but to many inaccuracies for me to watch any further.

Wishy Washy movie
If I were to put pen to paper and script a movie about Rommel, then I would give it a little more balance than this movie. The movie does hold the concept with which Rommel is held within modern times. That he was a great general, honourable man and the people loved him. I would disagree on all three proposals. To me Rommel was an ordinary leader lacking innovation, and, a selfish man who was not particularly liked by either his soliders or staff. This movie is entertaining but the content is rubbish for the most part.Such a pity as the subject matter holds great scope for making an interesting movie.

Worth viewing
A German movie with subtitles, well made & good acting. Short parts interspersed with film footage of the time on a few occasions. A lot of the story was in the US-made movie Valkyrie. A sad & undeserved end for a much respected soldier in his home country & even amongst many of our own allied troops. It reinforced the madness of that regime.
