Five (nearly) classic Paul Simon albums - all boxed up.
When Simon & Garfunkel called it a day in 1970; Paul Simon wasted no time in establishing his (later) highly successful and respectable solo career.Self-titled debut album - released in 1972 - is a flawless classic.featuring UK hit singles; Mother and child reunion and Me and Julio down by the school yard - not a filler or below par song in sight!Continuing the following year with the second or sophomore album: There goes ryhmin' Simon - continues with relentless excellence - and eclectic musical styles, and interesting subject matters and observations.includes: Kodachrome and Take me to the Mardi gras. These two albums, along with; Hearts and bones (1983),Songs from the capeman (1997) and You're the one (2000) - are included on the 'Original album classics' box set first released in 2004.Hearts and bones - is by no means a let down, but not quite the same 'wow factor' of the previous two albums.one track to highlight is: The late great Johnny ace - a Wonderful tribute to John Lennon.Fourth album: songs from the caveman - is Paul Simon's most socially/politically observed l.p. release to date (1997).It sees him tackle issue of a Puerto Rican man's miscarriage of justice for a crime he didn't commit - a true story - apparently, that reaches a happy conclusion with his eventual release.featuring co-lead male and female vocals (uncredited on this release),it also finds PS in quite an angry mood with expletives used several times throughout the album - quite unnecessary on the whole.Fifth and final inclusion: You're the one - is for me the weakest but by no means awful album in the collection.two cherry pickers of mine; Old and Hurricane eye - both excellent songs. All five albums include; bonus tracks, demo's,acoustic versions, live versions etc - and enhances the whole package very well. This boxset style presentation is neat, but rather dissapointing in the fact that it includes cardboard sleeves for each cd discs, but no seperate booklet that could have contained; sleeve notes, lyrics and musician credits - sadly these are all missing. No mention of albums being digitally re-mastered - must be - as sound quality on all discs is excellent - to redress the afforementioned disappointments.N.B. my individual ratings for albums are; Paul Simon 5*,TGRS 5*,HAB 4*,SFTC 4.5* and YTO 3*.overall presentation 4 stars.Still highly recommended!
