Q: Is the cartridge supposed to rattle when you shake it? And it has a white powder all over it. Is this normal? It looks used.

Inside the Sub-Zero Air Filter, there is a small UV light bulb which aids in the sanitation of the air inside your refrigerator. When you shake the air filter, the charcoal will bump up against the lamp and something it will sound like the unit is “Broken”. This is perfectly normal. The unit is usually not broken. Once you install the new Air Filter inside the Refrigerator and reset the Pure Air button, if the unit is damaged, your Sub-Zero will promptly alert you. If that is the case, please contact the seller for an exchange

Q: How often do these need to be replaced?

Allegedly once per year. I just replaced mine at the two-year mark. Before and after... I couldn't tell the difference. Replacement, though, was simple other than the chore of moving two interior shelves (and contents) to allow purification doors to swing, one up, one down. Cartridge change was likewise simple - clicks into place. Water filter (used for icemaking only) changed at the same time along with vacuuming the coils while the cartridge was removed, the gain of extra space to reach the coils (but it's still a very awkward procedure).

a. Your Sub-Zero will let you know when it needs to be replaced. Average lifespan is 7-12 months. This depends on a number of factors including environmental influence and contents of the refrigerator. The most common cause of an early filter expiration is a faulty bulb within the unit. If this happens, please contact seller support for a replacement. If multiple failures happen, please contact your local servicer, because that is usually a sign that it is a faulty filter receptacle.
