Alaska Road & Recreation Atlas (Benchmark Recreation Atlases)

Dewtailed, but. . . .
Lots of good coverage of Alaska but what is missing, and is, on other similiar state atlasses, a picture of Alaska on the rear cover divided in small rectangles with the page numbers that cite that location inside to ease finding locations. Disappointed on the smidgin coverage of Nome as it has piqued my interest due to watching the Gold Rush shows on TV.

I Own Almost Every Benchmark Map For A Reason
I'm a map junkie, have been since I was a kid. I absolutely love the Benchmark maps and own nearly every state in the series, aside from Arizona and New Mexico. They are my favorite atlas, hands down. When I moved to Alaska in 2015, I was immensely disappointed to find Benchmark didn't produce an Alaska atlas. I even sent them an email requesting they do so, because I'm such a fan. Maybe that had something to do with it, but I saw the Alaska version in Seattle when I was visiting the lower 48 shortly thereafter. I was giddy and ordered it that same day from Amazon, didn't even think twice.I've spent several hours perusing and navigating the maps and it's mostly the same quality you'll find in the rest of the series. It has been enjoyable to review the coastlines, islands and extensive mountain ranges around the state though. As expected from Benchmark atlases, there is simply a ton of information presented throughout the atlas. There are some unique sun/darkness schedules shown, which I don't recall seeing in other states...probably because we have such different light cycles up here. We have enhanced our adventures many times with this atlas, exploring areas we might not have found if we were just relying on a GPS or Google Maps.About my only complaint is that they use a much larger scale for much of Alaska. Understandably so, I suppose, given that Alaska is 1/5th the size of the continental US and a proper Alaska atlas would be an inch thick. For the places I'm intimately familiar with in Alaska so far, the maps have been accurate. I do miss some of the fun details you'll find in the other states like Montana, where they detail Bigfoot sightings. (Who knows, maybe they're written off as homesteaders here?) The Alaska version also features a similar problem to the Montana atlas where mountainous regions don't have enough color differentiation to truly illustrate the majestic peaks we have here. (e.g. white = high elevation between 10-20K feet) The only real problem I've had is that the Seward area is a bit of a pain to navigate from because the Seward highway is frequently buried in the atlas' binding. These maps are way more accurate, fun and enjoyable to use than other maps of the state. I would strongly recommend buying this one if you're visiting Alaska or especially if you live here. If you're shopping for one, get this one!

I am nagged by a terrible longing for the Benchmark
I travel on backroads all over the US, and as a result I'm forced to use the Delorme in the east, where Benchmarks aren't available. Every time I look at one of the Delormes, I am nagged by a terrible longing for the Benchmark. Also, the Benchmarks contain far more detail. On the Delormes, most of the smaller backroads aren't labeled. On the Benchmark they are. Plus, it is an infinitely more beautifully example of cartography.I have nothing but praise for the Benchmark series. They're in a class of their own.

Excellent atlas for any kind of camping or off-roading!
Excellent atlas for any kind of camping or off-roading! The standard "Delorme Gazetteer" map books have always been my go-to maps for camping and off-roading, (and they still are) but I'm starting to rethink it after using this version. They are simply more "information dense" than the standard Delormes. That "information density" means that when you look at it at first, it can be a little bit overwhelming, but when you take a few minutes to study the legend page for the maps, you realize that you have much more info available for eyeballing.

Good to have in vehicle or plan with
We have used the Wyoming Benchmark Road & Recreation Atlas so many times more than we had original thought when purchased. It is a must if you are an outdoors-man, camping , fishing, hiking or just like the off roads. It has saved us many hours of confusion and great to use as a planner. We love it to pick where we will go for the next weekend off. Recommend if you are in or will be going off road in Wyoming.

Very good at showing the points of interest in an area
Very good at showing the points of interest in an area. Good for going to a new area and getting the most out of it in the least amount of time. Provides and opportunity to study up on history before going to an area since you get an idea what to look up.

Benchmark does a great job of providing accurate alternatives to driving freeways
Benchmark does a great job of providing accurate alternatives to driving freeways. I have several western states from Benchmark, they all provide the detail to drive in any area of the state like you lived there for years. When you want to actually see an area of a state and not just go from point A to point B as fast as possible, these are the go to for us.

A great travel guide to back roads and hidden attractions.
You can not beat the Benchmark Atlas. It has great detail and lots of useful information. I like the way it is organized into a section that is a recreation guide listing the top attractions in different parts of the state and a more detail topo map section. Well worth the money for those of us who like to get off the beaten path. Right now these maps only cover the western states. I hope they expand to cover the rest of the country.
