Derek taught me at Reading College
I haven't actually got this book as i am already in the building trade after first starting as a decorator. Doing my NVQ at Reading College back in the late nineties i was lucky enough to be taught by Derek Butterfield. This man knows everything there is to know about decorating to perfection, there's so many things i learned from him that i now teach to others in order to help them decorate the right way (as opposed to the 'builders finish). And i gotta say my glosswork is the best, all thanks to this guy. Hey Derek i hope you're well, thanks for the tutoring it set me on the right path!

and a little bit about more technical things like knowing what grade of roller pile to choose
This is a weird book.It does tell you a lot about, for example, the various tools and implements that painters and decorators use, how to care for them, and a little bit about more technical things like knowing what grade of roller pile to choose, or how to prepare a surface. The rest seems dedicated to health and safety information, like how to erect scaffolding, and how to position a step ladder. It has a really weird section that explains how the compression- ignition on your compressor works (I guess if you ever need to repair it?) which is not something you would ever typically care about. It features NOTHING on what I would call 'practical and applicable' painting techniques. You won't learn how to hold a paintbrush (amazing how many people don't know the correct way), how to hang wallpaper, what order to tackle painting various items, rules with mixing medium, or anything else of importance.More of an 'intro to painters tools and common sense type stuff you probably know anyway'.

Painting and Decorating
This book is a great reference book for anyone in the trade/ students of the trade. It covers every aspect (in great detail) that you can think of and more. I would say probably it bit too indepth for the average DIYer.

painting & decorating
Complete waste of money, tells you how a 2 stroke engine works & does"nt even cover hanging wallpaper.I won"t buy another book from amazon, you really need to take a good look inside any book of this type.

If you want to become an expert...
There's nothing like this book out there. This is college text book on the craft of painting meant to work alongside an instructor with hands on studio experiance. This is an excellent book that explains paint. You will have to do the research to find the company that makes the specific products. Example: Etch PrimerAmerica has a disrespect for the craft of paint in architectural settings and generally has never seen a great paint job in their lives. There are many getting Historic Preservation degrees, but even in the National Park Service there are no paint experts. This book will help you become one.

Strictly Technical Info
This is the equivalent of manufacturers specs but instead from a scholar-like professor of painting written for painting contractors. Would serve as a reference for a commercial or industrial painting contractor/company.
