Not just crystals!
I think my husband is enjoying this even more than our daughter. She's 5 and is an active observer in most of this. Though she and I saw the gorgeous crystals on the box and were most excited about that, there is a very smart buildup of experiments that start simply with salt and water evaporation and go from there. The experiments really add so much knowledge and a solid foundation of understanding and foster a love of science. Probably ideal for 10-12, but as long as a parent is closely supervising, you can absolutely do this with a younger child.

Excellent for getting kids interested in science and chemistry
Our seven-year-old neighbor boy loved this science kit. He hadn't shown much interest in science, but this kit offers fun and noticeable results that pulls a kid in. His Dad got involved because it's so interesting, so this is a good science kit to bring together parents and children in a project. Anytime a person can make science fun, it can lead to an even greater interest and experimentation. Keep it fun!

Fun experiments for teenagers and up
This science kit comes with almost all you need to get start experimenting with materials and creating crystals. The kit is intended for ages 13 and above where some experiments may require supervision. The instructions provided with the kit do a good job at ramping up the difficulty of the experiments and explaining what is going on. You will need to provide your own salt and sugar (common household items) as well as a cup and access to water (some boiling may be required). Some experiments require you to place it in the refrigerator or leave it out for a few days before observing. So do note that time is a component in most of these experiments.Overall these little science experiments are both fun and educational. This makes the perfect gift for a young individual who is interested in science and maybe even more specifically someone interested in geology.

Really nice kit
I'm reviewing this after we've only made the sugar rock candy, but we started there because it was the most exciting to the kids. It kinda worked (more on this below) and the instructions for that process were clear enough. However, it was lacking a few details that would have been helpful, like for how long to stir in the sugar into the water - what we were looking for as an end goal? - and so that I added from my experience of doing this project in the past. It's also the reason I gave it four stars because, as someone who creates instructional materials, I think they need to be considered from the user experience to that degree. If there are other little gaps in instruction for a process I'm not familiar with, that would be more of a problem. The results of the rock candy was that it formed on the bottom of the jar instead of the stick. Lots of crystals formed! But it was "rock" solid and we couldn't get it out. Was that our error? Maybe/probably!As an adult, I'm impressed with how many options are contained in this kit, love the tin, and think it would be well received as a gift by a kid in the relevant age range, though adult supervision and help seems to be pretty essential for 10-11 year olds. I will update my review if the instructions for the rest of the projects feel slightly incomplete or more thorough.

Instructions need improvement
I had high hopes for this kit. The packaging and tin look really fun and high quality. Unfortunately, the instructions were lacking/not clear and had some obvious mistakes, which made this a bit of a disappointment for the price. I've attached an example of unclear/incorrect instructions (See step 3. It says to insert the second syringe into the other end of the syringe instead of the other end of the plastic tube). My kids still had some fun with it though, and hopefully learned something.

Great learning activities
I got this because my 14 year old loves crystals. This is a good educational tool to make them. The kit comes in a tin so everything stays together. The chemicals are labeled with the warnings. The booklet has 18 experiments that explains each step that needs to be done and what to look for. My 14 year old has no trouble reading and following the directions. I also like that it includes other facts related to the experiment. As I was going through the booklet I noticed you will need to get additional supplies to do the experiments. So definitely recommend reading the booklet.A great activity for the older kids to do.
