Remarkable book on a remarkable lady
A well written book on the persona of Hema Malilini. Possessing beauty and brains, Hema Malini is a wholesome, multi faceted personality indeed. A rare elegant lady in the true sense. She does a lot of multitasking too. However, I find it difficult to accept her being a part of radical, fascist and right wing party which generates extreme hate amongst people of India. I feel Hema does not subscribe to the philosophy of her party as she comes across as being a very secular and tolerant person, seeing her excellent relations with Dilip Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, Salim-Javed, Kamal Amrohi etc. At 73, Hema Malini looks quite young, beautiful and a person raring to do more and more - she’s indefatigable indeed.

One of the best biographies of an actor
Its no mean task to sum up a superstar's life in a few hundred pages. However Ramkamal Mukherjee does exactly that, with a lot of finesse. Details are not spared yet prose does not become tedious. Usually a superstar's life ends with her/him fading away but Ms.Malini's life has four distinct phases - student of classical dancing, superstar actor, politician & great exponent of classical dancing; almost coming to a full circle. Each phase is covered in detail here. Even controversies are not spared. Such candour is absent in most biographies written on Indian personalities. Full marks to the author. If you are a fan of the actress or just want to read about a lady who led her life on her own terms in a patriarchal society without sacrificing her femininity yet not budging an inch from her convictions; Beyond the Dreamgirl is THE book.
