Review With each successive novel, Pamela Hartshorne's writing goes from strength to strength. There is no doubt that she has captured the idea of the time slip/dual narrative historical novel to perfection and she continues to enthral, beguile and entertain. Recommended if you like dual time narratives by Barbara Erskine, Susanna Kearsley, Rachel Hore. (http://jaffareadstoo.blogspot.co.uk/)What can I say? I LOVED this book . . . . I loved the whole time-slip part of the novel, and it was so well-written that it became completely believable . . . If you enjoy historical fiction, and have enjoyed previous authors such as Barbara Erskine and Deborah Harkness (although less of the supernatural in this novel!) then you will LOVE Pamela Hartshorne. (JaffaReadsToo)With richly evocative depictions of Jane's life in the sixteenth century, I loved how the historical period was brought to life. Coupled with the creepy atmosphere of the present Holmwood House and some dark, vengeful characters haunting both Jane and Roz, The Edge Of Dark is a deliciously compulsive read. I became so completely engrossed in this book, the world around me disappeared along with several hours of my day. I loved this book, and would highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction and timeslip novels. It's one of my personal favourites. (Cosybooks.com)An entertaining, compelling and genuinely eerie read. (shereadsnovels.wordpress.com)The Edge of Dark is the first Pamela Hartshorne novel I've read but it certainly won't be the last . . . This is a fantastic page turner, filled with twists and turns and a great cast of characters. It is at times thrillingly dark as the title suggests and I can't wait to read the author's previous books. This novel will be perfect for fans of Tudor fiction such as Philippa Gregory and of course fans of time slip fiction such as that of Barbara Erskine. I did like this book
I did like this book, very much. But, like other reviewers I wish she'd change the plot. This is the third book I have read by this author and whilst the characters are all different much of the plot is the same as the other two. That said it is beautifully written and flows nicely although there are lengthy swathes of descriptive text which really do not need to be there. I hope the next book I read by this author (no, I have not been put off at all) will have a happier ending for the characters based in the past, as I'm sure there will be more time-slip novels to come from Ms. Hartshorne - hopefully with a vastly different storyline.

Mystery and suspense in the 16th and 21st centuries!
Pamela has written another winner. Her books are time slip stories set in York in the present day and in Elizabethan times. The Edge of Dark is a real mystery thriller, both in the present and the past. Roz is the lead in the present and Jane in Elizabethan England.Their stories run parallel to each other and are full of tension and fear. I held my breath at times!Pamela offers a fascinating insight into the life and times in the 16th century - the first time we meet Jane is one of the most upsetting scenes I've ever read and I have no doubt that it is accurate! The book is also about families and rejection and the consequences. If you have a fear of fire then this might not be the book for you!Looking forward to Pamela's next book already.

... brilliance - I have to confess to being slightly disappointed with this one
Having read two previous Pamela Hartshorne books - which I personally felt bordered on brilliance - I have to confess to being slightly disappointed with this one. This is probably a little unfair, as it is still a very good read but I felt that it lacked the depth of the others and I found the characters did not grip or absorb my interest as much as previously. However, this writer clearly is excellent and talented and I have still given four stars - for me it missed the fifth star due mainly to an abrupt and rather disappointing ending. For those of you for whom this is the first of Pamela's novels you have read, and if you gave this one less than four stars, please read "Time's Echo" or "The Memory of Midnight" - you cannot fail to be enthralled by either of these.

Good Read
I've read Patricia's two previous novels and agree with other reviewers that they are along the same lines, but then I knew that when I purchased it, so there's no gripe there from me. I loved the way Patricia drew on her historical knowledge to describe in detail how life was between the rich and poor in the past without it seeming like a tutorial. She brought the ghost of the past to life and I enjoyed Jane's story perhaps more than I did Roz in the present. I enjoyed the seamless transition between the two characters and the time slip was very well done. Other reviewers have outlined the plot so I won't repeat it. I have deducted 1 star as I felt the ending was disappointing and very rushed and overall unsatisfactory and could have been finished off better, but other than that I enjoyed it.

Really loved this book.
Perfectly crafted, spooky, compelling, historically convincing -- this ticks all the boxes. I am now a confirmed fan. I love ghost stories, and I love well written historical fiction, with carefully researched and convincing period detail that brings the past alive. The two time periods here are interwoven with great skill. I'm off to purchase and devour more of Ms Hartshorne's beguiling work.

Another cracking book!
I read Time's Echo a while ago, which is what encouraged me to buy this book. It is along the same lines as TE, it has the present day love story and the "time slip" story. Both have you on the edge of your seat! I love the vivid descriptions off Elizabethan England, though I am very glad not to have lived then. I found Jane a very attractive character, the Elizabethan storyline is, again, more engaging than the present day.

Gripping and engaging from the outset
I have read all of Pamela Hartshorne's novels and this followed a well trodden path. They are all very similar and if you have read others then this will be a familiar story. The books are all well written, both the modern and historical parts. Pamela is good at creating characters who engage the reader. This book is clever in that it has gripping plots in both the now and then stories. I loved it and desperately wanted to know what would happen next. The ending is a bit predictable but great getting there.

Very disappointing
If you love Barbara Erskine whose attempted copycat this book is DONT buy it. I was eager to read it but struggled with the prose the total lack of intrigue & could not identify with th characters. Also I did not like the authors crudity & overt sexual scenes. NOT Barbara Erskine & not a good read.

A riveting book
I struggled to put this down. The author takes you from the present to the past seamlessly and pulls you into the story as though you are a bystander
