How a compilation should be made.
Blood-Rooted is an absolute clinker. The album serves as a collection of most of the band's B-Sides, most of which are live tracks recorded live in Minneapolis which (I suppose unfortunately) have better production merits than either of the band's full live releases. Although a few tracks from the show are left out here, all but one of the highlights make the cut (the immensely fun "Anticop", a re-ordered version of the less-than-classic dud "Antichrist" from the band's rubbish first EP, Bestial Devastation), but the one-two punch of a blistering "Refuse/Resist" and an excellently mixed "Slave New World" more than make up for it.As far as the non-live tracks go, all but 3 are worth the price of the CD alone, especially considering you can pick it up from Used And New for next to nothing. The band's covers of Sabbath's "Symptom Of The Universe" and Celtic Frost's "Procreation Of The Wicked" ought to satisfy your lust for heavy, heavy tunes, whereas Titas' "Policia", R.D.P.'s "Crucificados..." and Dead Kennedy's "Drug Me" showcase the lesser explored hardcore punk influences of the band. The song "War" is a Bob Marley cover in name only, taking inspiration from the original rather than actual musical themes. A couple of demos and remixes from the Roots album are a tad less interesting than the rest of the album, but in no way interrupt the flow of things.Unless you want to shell out a massive amount of money hunting down all the limited-edition albums and singles (which I did before I sold them all and bought this beauty, making a tidy profit in the process!) this is the best way to own a side of Sepultura tragically less heard. It's also a great way to discover a couple of great tracks from some bands you may have never heard of otherwise. Another mostly-unheard Sepultura release is 2003's Revolusongs cover EP, included here in the UK with copies of Roorback. If you like this, you'll love that.An excellent addition to any Sepultura collection, casual or otherwise, unlike the Roots Of Sepultura compilation, which is more suited to diehards but still worth a listen. That's where you'll find your "Anticop" fix. Highly recommended.
