A wonderful conversation by two of today's top thinkers
This book is a must read for anyone interested in 'Emotion' , where it stems from and how we can learn to control it's functions. It's also a brilliant read in the sense of getting an understanding of how we as people can live in today's society and show compassion with and as one with the rest of the planet.I can't praise these two conversationalists enough, for allowing us to all but listen to hours of enlightening conversation towards the understanding of 'Emotion' and the impact, at times unknowingly, on the individual and on the planet we inhabit. Finally it's a book to drop in on, long after you've finished to get wonderful insights into how we can all live a much more emotionally controlled life and show compassion for all those who live and support us.

Incredible journey
A great voyage through emotions from two very prominent figures. I have enjoyed readings books by both of the authors, and listening to the dialogue between them was very thought provoking and enjoyable.

ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO HEAR THE WORDS OF DALAI LAMA
This is not the first book I read about conversations with Dalai Lama, I have always enjoyed his broad points of view and joyful and at the same time deep sense of life. In this book again we can see how he fits easily on the framework of modern psychology, guided, or better, inspired, by Paul Ekman. The book is a series of conversations, recorded as they were in situ, spontaneous and fresh, dinamic, live, about how to deal with our emotions and mood. It is particularly interesting the first pages when they try to distinguish between mood and emotions and their relation, very ilustrative.I am a doctor in Social Psychology myself and I would recommend this book to anyone, both professionals and lay people, to clarify how to recognize and control, if possible, our emotions.

A Fuller Understanding of the Emotions
This is a mind opening book from two masters of different traditions. Paul Ekman has explored the expression of emotion through studying body and facial expression. As a scientist he discovered many aspects of emotion but from the outside in. In his contact with the Dalai Lama he found a profound change in himself that he couldn't understand clearly from his scientific knowledge. He sought out the Dalai Lama for these discussions to open himself to a different way of understanding. The Dalai Lama has spent his life in the practice of meditation thus opening himself through experience to a way of understanding emotion that leads to moving from the inside out. But more than that he has explored how through insight and awareness human beings can begin to bring the many destructive emotions into a balance in life. This is an unusual and fantastic book that can reveal new possibilities for the reader.

Chatting about emotional evolution
Ekman gets a whole 39 hours with the Dalai Lama, discussing the world of emotion. The two trade personal stories and research findings, basically talking like friends at the coffee shop. How are emotions triggered? What causes the big differences in intensity, duration, and quality of emotion between people? What aspects of emotional life are shared with animals? (This comes up a lot, and it's fascinating.) What aspects of emotion have survival value? How do moods shape and limit our fields of awareness? What works in overcoming our emotional blinders towards life?Throughout the discussion these elder gents pull in brief testimonies from social scientists or Buddhist teachers. They think up whole new directions for psychological research. It's fruitful.
