Good read about ultras as well as life the universe and everything.
Like it says on the back cover of The Real Frank Zappa Book, this book is written like you are listening to an interesting hitch hiker who is happy to talk. The main topic is Ultra Running, but this is used as a central theme to cover a lot of autobiographical ground. It is emotional, anecdotal and story based, and a genuine page turner. The author is a likeable eccentric and writes in a really entertaining way. It covers some fairly sad/emotional bits, but that is really balanced by the funny stuff, making it very real - if you know what I mean. I did end up giggling and having to read bits out loud to my wife. I've read a few other books on ultra running written by the 'champs', e.g. Scott Jurek, Rich Roll etc, after reading Born to Run and getting inspired. Sometimes reading stuff like that can feel a bit daunting, like, 'I'll never be like that'. But this book is about the adventures of an amateur and inspired me to think like, 'yeah maybe I could give that a go then'.The ending was not what I expected, but I don't think this will be the last thing from the author, and I look forward to reading about the next stage in his adventures.

Gripping
Whatever your plans are put them on hold if you buy this book or if your off on holiday take this with you. What I liked so much about this book is that Dave has wrote it brutally honest and grips you from the start. This is more than a running book this is a book that I'm sure some of us will relate to in our life's and the author pulls no punches about his own personal battles and how he overcome them to make him the man he is. Stand on the podium Dave and receive the medal you so much deserve. Inspirational, thought provoking and so much more,.. to sum up a bloody good read

Worth the time to read but only half about running
Dave is an addict and this is his life so far. He was addicted to drugs, alcohol, running and now self reflection. The chapters alternate between recalling Dave's running history and his addiction history. He wraps it up by finding religion and offering some truly terrible poetry. Maybe one day he'll stop being an addict and just be Dave. I wish him well on that journey.

Love this book from begging to end.
A truly inspiring read from a very honest author. The story is both moving and very amusing. A great example of life and ultra running (they are very 2 very similar things). I highly recommend this to anyone, even if your not a runner. Hopefully it'll inspire you to get out there and give it a go. Thanks for writing it Dave Urwin.

Definitely earned its place on my book shelf
Loved it so much I went back to re-read it a second time a week or two after finishing it the first time around! Trying to get my wife to read it now so she can get a grasp on why running has hooked me in in such a big way :) Definitely give this one a read.

Good read more about mental health then running

An excellent read for runners, non-runners and those living with depression.
Excellent read. As an ultra runner I found the running parts fascinating (this is what led me to buy the book in the first place). However, it is the personal journey which Dave so humbly describes which sets the book apart.

Stumbled on this while looking for something else, so took a punt. Glad I did as it was an excellent read, relatable to my own situation and ended up being a real page turner. This book has earned a permanent place on my space-restricted shelf.
