If you want to make a proper teddy, but you don't know what to do, this is a good introduction
.My niece asked me to make her a teddy bear for Christmas. She definitely didn't want a "bought" one - she really wanted a "proper teddy", which had been made especially for her.Oh dear. I'm not a prolific sewer; my repertoire is limited to basic soft toys, curtains, and hemming jeans, so for me, a jointed teddy bear was definitely a challenge.Fortunately, I found this kit quite straightforward to use.WHAT IS PROVIDED?All material, ready cut: fur (for the body/head/arms/legs) and black felt for the footpads.Eyes.Wool for embroidering the nose and mouth.5 plastic joints for the arms, legs, and head.Instructions, printed clearly in good English.WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?Stuffing (quite a lot - it needs to be firmly packed). I bought a pack of 2 basic pillows for £3 from Asda and used almost the entire contents.Sewing thread, preferably the same colour as the fur.Strong thread for attaching the head/body and sealing in the stuffing,Optional (my choice) - something to weigh down the bottom half of the body so the teddy sits properly. I used half a pound of beanbag filler plastic pellets.Optional (my choice) - I fitted a mounded plastic nose (15p from my local craft emporium) because I'm not that good at embroidery, and I didn't want to risk ruining the whole look with dodgy stitching.Optional - (my choice) - I also managed to fit a full sized Steiff growling mechanism inside the body cavity. There was plenty of room, and once it was packed in with stuffing, it couldn't be felt, but it could definitely be heard.MAKING THE TEDDYI completed the teddy in 2 days - probably about 6 hours of work in total.I had no problems using my sewing machine; even though the fur was quite thick, it went through without any bother, however, I definitely needed to pin and tack every seam beforehand. The instructions were basic, but clear - I thought that the trickiest part was inserting the ears, but it was clearly explained and illustrated, so I managed that without any mishaps.ANY PROBLEMS?There was only one minor problem - with the fur fabric, which is coated with a stiffener on the non-fur side to stop it from stretching or fraying. Unfortunately, about one inch of the piece which made up the stomach had not been coated properly, so the stomach was bulging a little too much when I started to insert the stuffing. I sorted this by reinforcing the problem area, with hidden hand stitches latticed behind the fur, to stop it from stretching.FINISHED RESULTThe end result is actually quite nice - a cute, old-fashioned teddy, in a traditional colour, and a durable material. For anyone who hasn't made a soft toy before, this is a nice way to get started.

Not impressed with the complete contents
Instructions good, but not enough joints included in the kit, needed to ask for more. Again 3 kits later
