Handbook of Ancient Greek and Roman Coins Paperback – 1 May 1995

This is an excellent 287 page book that is packed full of useful information on Ancient Greek and Roman coins. It impressively contains over 1000 full-size photographs of the coins, which helps enormously in interpreting the dates and inscriptions. What makes coin collecting so interesting is the fascinating stories behind those individual coins - so the more you can discover about the different emperors, and the further you delve into the meaning behind the symbols and mythology surrounding the coinage produced in their honour, the more rewarding this hobby can be for you as a collector.I like the way this book eases the reader in by firstly illustrating how early coins were indeed made. It then goes on to explain how you can ‘read’ those coins, yet does this in such a way as not to overwhelm a complete beginner. If you are serious about collecting Greek and/or Roman coins, then I think you’ll find this book indispensable, and you will find yourself referring to it time and again in order to better understand those coins you are considering buying, or those you already own. Oh, and it’s worth reminding yourself ever so often that when you proudly (and respectfully) hold one of your ancient coins, you’re also holding a piece of history. That same coin was something that was carried, handled, and exchanged for goods and services by an individual who lived, loved and worked on this earth well over 1500 years ago! Anyway, given how useful a reference book this is, I have no hesitation in recommending it to fellow coin collectors. Many thanks for checking out my review, I hope you found it of use.
