This thing is excellent whether you are hiking, or just as an emergency preparedness tool. You can always use a water filter. I have one in storage for emergencies, but I used another one while hiking and it works great. You will always have some weird tastes in the water, often even if you boil it, depending on where you are getting the water from, and what water you are used to, but I didn't mind the taste and I was healthy and happy my whole trip using this thing, which is an excellent rating in my book! Highly recommend!
