Mount Royal, nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards, marks the second full-length album from virtuosic guitar duo Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge. Mount Royal is a testament to the visceral power of incredible musicianship and true creative collaboration. Produced by Gabe Witcher (one of Eldridge’s fellow Punch Brothers), Mount Royal includes eight originals, several reimagined versions of old bluegrass songs, and a cover of Eddie Vedder’s “Sleeping By Myself” that is as engrossing as it is surprising. The arrangements on the album’s 12, mostly instrumental, tracks feature complex, rollicking guitar lines one would expect from such technically gifted players, but these moments are allowed to breathe. That is, Lage and Eldridge understand the potency of space in their compositions, and the sonic hills and valleys illustrate that greatness often lies in the unexpected. Lage’s notable jazz background is apparent, yet Mount Royal ventures into old-time, gospel and bluegrass without ever settling into one genre. The energy between Lage and Eldridge is remarkable, and Mount Royal does not fail in conveying the pair’s mutual passion for the acoustic guitar and respect for collaboration.

Another superb album from Julian Lage who must now be one of the most highly rated guitarist in the world. He and Chris Eldridge who both play vintage Martin guitars have produced some lovely acoustic guitar music on this CD including the songs. Excellent virtuoso acoustic guitar work and I can thoroughly recommend it to other acoustic guitar enthusiasts.

Impressive guitar duo
A most enjoyable follow up to their first recording made together. Two great guitarists and Chris' singing is also excellent.

Bellissimo!
Devo dire che non mi aspettavo musica così interessante, così poco classificabile. Due bravissimi chitarristi al servizio della buona musica.

Ein Meisterwerk
Die CD ist absolut grossartig. Jazz und Country/Folk in schönster Vermählung, vergleichbar etwa mit Charlie Hadens Familienalbum "Rambling Boy" oder John Scofields "Country For Old Men".

Two of the best young artists on the music scene and one spectacular album.
Two consummate musicians from two different backgrounds, making something new and amazing. There are some amazingly talented young musicians these days, and Julian and "Critter" are some of the best. There is still hope for music.Bought this on vinyl and the recording and mastering are exceptionally clear.
