Tiger Tank Manual

Save your pennies and buy this instead of the 2011 edition
I gave away my copy of the 2011 edition of this book some time ago, and having developed a greater interest in tanks in the meantime, wanted to buy another copy. Alas, used copies are currently selling for anywhere from $348 to $5,268(!) Thankfully, there's a cheaper alternative out there. Provided the buyer is willing to wait 10-14 days for a copy to arrive from the UK, copies of this edition can be had for a MUCH more reasonable price. As far as I can tell, it's the exact same book as the 2011 edition, but with a proper stitched binding this time.Re-reading this book made be rediscover what got me hooked on this series in the first place, and what I wish it'd return to. Recent Haynes "manuals" tend to be everything-but-the-kitchen-sink affairs, but this one is remarkably tight and straightforward. It focuses entirely on the Tiger Ausf E, specifically Tiger 131, currently at the Bovington Tank Museum and the world's only still-running Tiger. For a $20 novelty title, this book delivers more than you'd expect. The text, written largely by the head historian, curator, and workshop managers at the Tank Museum, provides an excellent balance of technical and historical information, without over-inflating the tank's capabilities.Although there's some useful information on the tank's development and the brief career of Tiger 131, the highlight is obviously the technical material, including numerous insights into restoring and running the tank. There are some wonderfully detailed diagrams (some in color) of the Tiger's inner workings, including the drive sprockets, ventilation systems, gearbox, etc. There are illustrated step-by-step instructions for starting the tank and running the engine, stowage diagrams, and a photographic "walkthrough" of the fighting compartment. There's even a description of the tank's damage at the time of its capture written by a forensics expert, and asides on recreating the tanks "Zimmerit" coating and choosing the correct paint scheme.Although I'm sure this isn't the definitive work on the Tiger I (searching for "Tiger Tank" under "Books" gives me 791 results - good luck choosing just one!), it's a pretty darned enjoyable one that doesn't require the reader to be armor fanatic to follow it. If you have an interest in tanks, or enjoy other Haynes books, it's well worth buying - just not for $5,000!

Not what I expected, but pleasantly surprised!
I was expecting a “wrench-it” manual for the Tiger tank, thinking “How cool would it be to be able to show my buddy’s how to repair a Tiger tank”. I’m a hard-core mechanic, so that was the expectation, this being a Hanes publication. The book is a very informative work, short on Tiger repair/maintenance but long on technical and historical coolness. The subject of the book is Tiger 131, captured by British Forces during the North African campaign. How did the Brits capture Tiger 131 you ask? The book tells the same story told a thousand times before. To get the real story behind the acquisition of Tiger 131, I’d recommend getting Catch That Tiger by Noel Botham & Bruce Montague….

Fabulous Book!
Great nostalgic manual with lots of historical information contained within it. My only wish is that it had a little bit more maintenance information the way an automotive counterpart Haynes manual would.

Good Book!
Not quite the "Owners Workshop Manual" level of detail I expected. But, still a good book.

Another excellent Haynes Title
One hesitates to draw the comparison between the Haynes manuals and the "for Dummies" series; and yet, in a way, they are similar in that both try to provide an overview of a given subject, with enough detail information to provide a good overview of a given subject; but without so much detail as to get one bogged down in endless minutiae. This book contains an excellent balance between detail and general information, and while not the "be all and end all" of books about the Tiger series of vehicles, nonetheless makes for a valuable addition to one's library for the money. I say this even though my reference library is quite extensive, but in the end, I suppose each reader will have to decide whether or not this title serves their needs. I recommend it freely.

NO ES LO QUE ESPERABA
No es lo que esperaba, pocos gráficos similares a los de la portada y muchas fotografías. Buscaba algo más técnico

Great addition to any Tiger enthusiast's collection
Delivery was quick, arrived in great shape. Very well written, easy to read (even for an old fart like me). Loaded with photographs and diagrams, this makes for a great reference if you are a model builder. The authors have done their homework, and a special shout out to David Willey and David Fletcher of The Tank Museum.
