The alphabet of the oghams is also known under the name of oghm, oghaim or ogam, and was created, according to legend, by Ogma (Celtic god Ogmios), god of knowledge. Inscriptions in ogham characters are only found in the British Isles. There are about 350 known inscriptions carved between 300 & 700 AD. Although many were magical, most were memorial or invocatory. Our oghams are symbolic of trees associated with months of the year. All of the trees representing the months and letters of the Celtic calendar and alphabet also represent a fragment of the Celtic cosmology, their archetypal symbols and their immediate world view. Each tree has a corresponding god or deity as well as a symbol and heavenly body associated with it.
