Subject to its own Pitchfork documentary, listed in numerous prestigious Best Albums of the 90s lists, and destined to be re-discovered by continuous generations, The Lonesome Crowded West stands as the defacto Northwestindie-rock record. Originally released in 1997, it not only helped shape the sound that came to be associated with theAmerican Pacific Northwest, but across these sprawling, wide-open 15 songs, Modest Mouse helped redefine whatwas possible for guitar music. As such, The Lonesome Crowded West has often been mimicked, but it's awesome open-hearted existentialism and manic ambition has rarely been matched. A modern classic that demands reappraisal.

Definitely the best MM album
I was briefly tempted by The Moon and Antarctica, but after many listens this is definitely the winner. Almost every song is packed with irresistible rhythms and riffs, a unique style and excellent lyrics to top it off. MM have a knack for choosing words with a satisfying natural rhythm/meter, a favourite example being "You move your mouth, you shake your tongue, you vibrate my eardrums; you're saying words, but you know I ain't listening" (but there are examples of it in almost every song). At first the long, slow sections found in several songs (Trucker's Atlas, Teeth like God's Shoeshine etc.) put me off, but the more you listen the more sense they make. In fact, the way songs change gear instantaneously is key to the way MM handles buildups and release of tension. If you're thinking about buying the album, listening to Doin' the Cockroach or Trucker's Atlas beforehand should soon convince you.

what can i say?
firstly, for the self concious person in me, forgive the public name. dont label me as an idiot young kid, just its been a while since i've done this. All I have to say about this is that its my favourite album in the world. The Moon and Antarctica is a more well put together album ( reminiscent to me to OK Computer, for perfection), but for me, the LCW has the stronger songs. I could write for pages about why I regard Modest Mouse as the best, but its probably better to form your own opinion. Modest Mouse changed how I viewed everything.

Disappointed a little by the consistently frantic vocal attack but ...
Started as a long-time devotee so expectations high. Disappointed a little by the consistently frantic vocal attack but that does go with the territory. Lots of mousisms to enjoy, great lyrics alongside lazy ones, contrasts and contradictions everywhere, different to the rest of the music world and thought provoking even when obscure.Great band - good album.

Beginning's start somewhere
Sounds like a get together jamming session . Not where I am at for music .

Good quality CD
Good quality CD that I couldn't find anywhere else - delivered within the time period. Although it would have been helpful to have it before Christmas, I didn't expect to get it so wasn't too disappointed. Very good value too!

Overrated
I have really enjoyed individual tracks by MM & bought this as it was rated quite highly, but was a little disappointed with a lot of the music on this album.

Awesome
It is great to finally be able to have, after all these years, this one. Being a big MM fan for about 20 years, it is great. I love it.

Anspieltipps: Heart Cooks Brain, Doin' The Cockroach, Cowboy Dan, Trailer Trash, Out Of Gas, Polar Opposites, Bankrupt On Selling.

quasi ottimo...
non e' ne "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" e neppure "No One's First, and You're Next", ma e' sicuramente un ottimo album.
