Gems

still sounding fabulous, then as indeed now ...
Patti LaBelle hits some unique notes on this album - the melancholy of the second track - a cover of DeBarge's All This Love, which doesn't prevent Patti from inserting a few playful yelps between the phrases, without breaking the spell. The Right Kinda Lover was the big hit, and it rollicks along with a fairly big, hefty rhythm; however there is more intensity in some of the other songs. Stay In My Corner and If I didn't Have You are ten particularly fabulous minutes - the emotional reach, the sustained notes so high, the surprises in the turns of the song. But the whole sequence lives up to the title - even if it is a bit of a cliche. On the back of the box there is a photo of a diamond looking quite big and exquisite, as if to silence you before the word cliche can pass your lips. Very nice cover photo of Patti too ... looks just like the singing itself ...

The Wrong Songs
Miss Labelle screeches rather than sings, and her voice is therefore totally unsuited to ballads: indeed, this album has all the musical qualities of a lorry with defective brakes coming to a halt.

Little Gem
As a music lover I have always found it impossibly restrictive to name a single artist, song or album as 'the' favourite or best. But when ever the question is asked, Patti Labelle is always the first artist who springs to mind, and Gems is the album. I bought this back in 1994 (was it really that long ago?), loved it immediately and played it endlessly. I still play it regularly. It is truely timeless, and the fact that my High School Musical, Miley Cyrus loving 10 year old granddaughter also loves both Gems and Patti is testiment to the timelessness of both singer and album. Even within the album, it is impossible to name a favorite. I'm having this album played at my funeral before it is buried with me! Rock on Patti!

the gem is 'Patti'
I love Patti Labelle - have ALL her albums... This one is excellent with great material and her voice is in tip top form. Can't single out one particular track 'cos they're all good

I cannot get enough of this album.
I want to buy a second copy and hand it down to my grandchildren! This album is sweet, the glitter of the "gems" is not in vain. With happy and sometimes sad melodies that go straight to the heart, you'll want to play it over and over again. "I'm in love" opens the album with such assurance that you have landed in that special place and from there, let music do the rest. Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are some of my favorite producers and their work on this project is simply wonderful.Buy this album and let it infect you from head to toe.
