A scientist performs experiments involving intelligence enhancing drugs and virtual reality on a simple-minded gardener. He puts the gardener on an extensive schedule of learning, and quickly he becomes brilliant. But at this point the gardener has a few ideas of his own on how the research should continue, and the scientist begins losing control of his experiments.

Absolutely wild cult classic. Brought down by a lack of subtitles.
It's basically a crazy early-90s horror take on Flowers For Algernon. It's completely crazy, at times hilarious, and other times incredibly dark and disturbing, then at other times poignant and deep. A scientist (Brosnan) experiments with enhancing intelligence. He meets the simple-minded illiterate Jobe (Fahey) who becomes his human test subject. His intelligence improves and things go off the rails completely as Jobe develops superhuman powers. It's quite a long film at about 2 hours, 30 mins running time, and yet it kept me watching to the end. The writing, characters and actors (especially Fahey, but also Brosnon too) are what make this so good. It's the weirdest combination of bad early 90s CGI and awesome practical effects. As a big fan of old school films, especially ones that have super dated visions of the future I am now living in, I highly recommend The Lawnmower Man to anyone.Watching this in 2022 with the VR tech we have now is absolutely hilarious. The film is complete with wacky 1990s 3D modeling/animation, and yet it truly does explore some of the legit subjects and concepts around virtual reality despite how typically over-the-top it is made to look. It's an unforgettable film. I've deducted 1 star because it has no subtitles on Prime Video, and this is a problem because the audio can be inconsistent at times.

Good film, but not widescreen
I remember going to see this film on the cinema when it was released (in the UK) in 1992, so I was really disappointed to find that this DVD release is not today's standard widescreen 16:9, but 4:3, like it was made for TV back in the 90's. Also the picture display and audio quality is badly in need of a remaster.I'm sure if it was fully remastered, made 16:9 and released again on DVD, it would look fantastic. As it is, it becomes a bit of a chore to watch after a while.Considering the film was made 30 years ago, the 'VR' effects still look good.

Not bad
Concidering it was made in 1993, its not that bad. since I remember still listing to taps and watching VHS. The story is okay, the film can be a bit slow but it does lay down the charectors well

Laughable
The start of it was pretty funny but after that it was cliche and boring lmao. May have been cool back in the day or something but I found myself skipping through it lol. Maybe worth a watch if you too drunk to change the movie lmao.

This is the director's cut!
I saw nowhere in the description that this was the director's cut, so I believe this description is misleading. The original release of this film, though dated and silly, is fun. The director's cut contains a storyline that makes it too ridiculous and I knew from the beginning that I didn't want that version.

Blinded by Nostalgia
Don't be fooled into thinking that just because this is the 10th anniversary edition it will contain a plethora of extras, unless interactive menus and a theatrical trailer really do it for you. This film has not aged well, although the CGI scenes hold a certain degree of nostalgia. It is filmed in a way that makes it look like a cheap daytime soap opera. Jeff Fahey as Jobe is unconvincing and annoying. If, like me, you have fond childhood memories of this film you won't be disappointed, although don't expect it to be anywhere near as impressive as you remember.

Ouch
I used to like this film back in the days (90's.) I have had it on VHS but then finally decided to get this 10th A.E. Now, where do I start? First there a no subtitles which makes it very difficult to hear the dialogue from time to time. And was the music really this crapy in the original? The transfer to dvd is not very good either. I usually dont mind that much but this was a bit to grainy even for my taste. It'a a different version aswell with "new" scenes that I can understand why they where cut from the original version. Here they just slows down the tempo. No extras on the DVD either. The acting and the CGI needs no further rewiew when most other reviewers already has made that subject clear. But...I like this movie anyway, maybe for nostalgic reasons, but still. I will although try to get the original version with hopefully all the defects mentioned above nowhere to be seen (or heard.)
