Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts

I knew the drawbacks to this book (errors in printing) but am taking her class in Reno so I appreciate getting the book at a discount. It’s really in very good shape.

Rarely does a quilt book have so much new and interesting material in it, when so many people are jumping on the quilting bandwagon and producing so much that has already been done or is general knowledge. This one is amazing; far exceeding expectations. It has so much information, it could have been two books. Paper piecing is the technique, included is a CD, and somehow (I haven't tried it yet) it interfaces with the EQ program. I have been looking for something new that I might use as inspiration for a quilt show entry, and I think this just might be it. Not only does this book have specific instructions for some projects, but it also teaches you the principles that will allow you to make your own, original quilt. Now, I must tell you I haven't made anything from the book yet, but I have read through the directions, and looked through the whole book. Maybe after I make one, I will let you know how it went. It'll be a while, though, it has to join the que, but it will probably jump a few steps and get used before its normal turn.Not a book for beginners, however. I'd say this is for intermediate to advanced quilters. None of these quilts will be done in a day, or even close. The reward for finishing a quilt like the ones in the book will be a great sense of accomplishment, admiration from your friends, and maybe a good entry for competition.

Awesome concept, but, unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the earlier editions loaded with error after error. Granted, RaNae's website has catalogued the many errata, but going through the book and making the corrections is a daunting task. To be fair, the errors were in the editing/printing, and were not the fault of the author. Still vexing, however, to the reader. Fundamentally, if you can get your hands on an edition that is dated 2009 or later, corrections will have been incorporated. I didn't know this before buying this book, unfortunately. That aside, it's a great technique that is clearly explained in this well-illustrated book. The complexity of the look of the spirals belies the ease of execution. If you know how to paper-piece, you're that much further ahead of the game, although there will be some subtle differences from what you have learned before now. The refinement of the technique taught here can be applied toward any paper-pieced quilt, not just spirals. Items that you will want to purchase in addition to the book are RaNae's seam roller, translucent foundations and the Add-A-Quarter ruler. There are many photo examples to provide inspiration to start designing your own spiral quilts. But for starting out and getting your feet under you, the included CD has templates for several of the quilts pictured. Starting out with one of them teaches and solidifies the technique, and gives ample confidence to start dreaming up one-of-a-kind creations.

Amazing techniques for exquisite quilting designs!This book and CD explaines the different shapes and designs to use for new patterns. They are unique and fabulous!! Very happy with the shop! My book arrived well packed and on time! Love dealing with shops thru Amazon !!!

Gorgeous book with numerous pictures and instructions for a huge variety of stunning quilts, but be forewarned that there is an absolutely shocking number of errors. I went to the author's blog and printed out the errata -- over 10 pages worth as a Word document! For a book in which the patterns rely on precision and very careful measuring, cutting, and sewing, I could not believe it. I think the publisher should have recalled all the books and reprinted them with the corrections, but know that would have been a financial disaster.Also be aware that if you want to make the eye-popping quilt on the cover, the pattern is NOT included in the book. Again, resorting to the author's web site, she explains that she does not own the rights to that particular quilt. I never like it when a QUILT is shown on the cover of a QUILT PATTERN BOOK and then directions to make it aren't included.Complaints aside, I do think this book will be useful, once I spend an hour or so amending it with the errata. The enclosed CD of templates is a great bonus, and thankfully you don't have to own EQ software to use them.

This book provides a lot of inspiration for the quilter who is looking for something different. It explains how to create your own "spirals" (similar to iris folding for paper) and talks about fabric colors, gradations and directional fabrics. It only gives patterns for 5 different quilts, but has a gallery of dozens of beautiful art quilts. It comes with a CD that has 42 templates. Templates can be used in Electric Quilt or you can just print them out for experimenting and coloring to create your own quilt. This is an excellent book for those quilters who are looking for something other than the traditional "block" quilt.However, it contains a huge amount of editorial errors. While a "Corrections" page is available on the authors website, it makes the book very confusing to use. It's a great resource for inspiration, but not for those who are looking for "step-by-step" instructions on making specific quilts.

I have not had the opportunity to do much more than scan through this wonderful book of Spiral Quilts by RaNae Merrill.At first glance, this book appears to have complete and detailed instructions for the creation of a complicated-looking design, which when followed correctly, should result in a show-class quilt without the frustration of having to figure out where and how the next piece fits in.The CD-ROM which accompanies this book contains the templates required. I feel that the information provided will give the quilt maker all the support required to complete this project.It was the detailed grafts & charts that piqued my interest in this book and I hope to begin this quilt in the very near future.

Only a few projects caught my eye but a very good book

This is a great book for the student of patchwork design technique.It is in the same vein as another title 'Log Cabin with a Twist'. Foundation piecing is a must here too. This is hard going on your machine needles, but a small price to pay for the spectacular results achieved.'Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts' has some terrific illustrations, and the quilts shown bring the technique to it's limits. Still, there are so many design possibilities, there are still tons of unique quilts to be made using these techniques.I am delighted I bought this book.

Now here is a book to have fun with! For those who have never tried this type of quilting before, the book covers almost everything from designing spiral blocks to making them up into spectacular quilts. The templates provided are superb, backed up by a disk containing pdf's to help with printing them out.RaNae Merrill has left nothing to chance and I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone with a bit of quilting experience who wants to perhaps step outside of their comfort zone and try something adventurous. You will not be disappointed! Just one tip though - take frequent breaks to relax your eyes when working with spirals, unless you want to become permanently cross-eyed!

This book gives clear advice and instructions and will inspire me to create things I would not have attempted otherwise. The basic designs give a good starting point and make a complicated task understandable so I will be able to work from this easily. I live in a rural area and being able to access this type of book on-line is fantastic it opens a whole new world in quilting for me. It really is amazing
