My partner has a PhD in his field, and I'm about to get mine in a different field. When this book first came out, he read it avidly and told me that he "could not put it down". I read his copy shortly thereafter, and incorporated some of the information into my dissertation. Straumann has written the kind of work you seldom see in academia, especially nowadays when almost all publications -- all least, in most humanities fields -- are either fluff or should not be allowed to pass for serious scholarship. This work cuts across fields and offers perhaps a distinct type of political science analysis which should, at the very least, be read by all ancient historians and those in related fields. Bravo!
