Product description NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE .com Though this recording only contains two singers widely remembered today--Licia Albanese and Beniamino Gigli--it captures much that's hard to find today. With all singers here, words are projected with great vitality. They come first, not the pretty tunes, and conductor Berrettoni is the model of flexibility, always allowing the verbal and musical gesture room to make its point while letting the singers show off a bit by holding notes a shade longer than modern conductors do. Albanese claims her later Mimis were more dramatically mature; this one could hardly be more fresh and vivid, even if she isn't so vocally lustrous. Gigli is simply a miracle: Vocal riches aside, he uses his voice to give as three-dimensional a portrayal as has ever been given to the oft-sung role of Rodolfo. Nimbus's packaging is sumptuous, but the sound quality a bit distant. --David Patrick Stearns

Buy one, get one free most lovely Boheme
It's rare to find two truly outstanding recordings of an opera on the same set. The complete recording is from La Scala 1979 and there is luckily also a video (stupidly enough, not commercially available yet) of this performance available.Kleiber shapes the music like a genius without ever overpowering his singers or letting the music sound too mellow. Cotrubas and Pavarotti are astonising together, and alone. I've had problems with her voice on other recordings but here she sings with so much poise and beauty of tone that you can't help but fall in love with this Mimi. Although Freni has the authentic Italian voice, Cotrubas is soooo charming that I even found her distinct accent lovely. Her acting on the video is also perfect for the role.Pavarotti is excellent on both recordings and justifies his fame and fortune. The easy emission of sound, the clarity of the words and the shine in his voice make an ideal Rodolfo. In 1969 the voice of course sounds even more youthful but it is still a miracle ten years later. The excellence continues in the other roles. The radiant Lucia Popp, a little bit past her prime but still stunning, has the right voice to contrast Mimi's lyricism. She does a stunning high diminuendo in her Walz. Cappuccilli and Bruscantini (in the highlights) both make ideal Marcellos and Colline also gets luxurious casting with Nesterenko so there really is no weak link in the cast in these recordings. The sound won't dissapoint either, nor will Schippers in the highlights with conducting almost as moving as Kleiber.I'd suggest you looked for the dvd of this 1979 performance but if that's not possible I'm sure you'll also enjoy the audio version. One of my favourite Bohemes, together with the classic Serafin/Tebaldi/Bergonzi recording.

MY FAVORITE "LA BOHEME"!
There are more recorded "Bohemes" than one can count. But I always come back to this one. To me this is the most tender and moving performance that I've ever heard. Recorded in 1938 and I believe the first complete recording of this opera, the sound is not what today's listeners are use to, but if you can get past that you are in for a wonderful listening experience from the golden age of opera. Gigli's voice has a velvety sweetness that no other tenor can capture. And a very young Licia Albanese sings with such youth and innocence that she just breaks your heart. The whole cast sings with great feeling and they sound as though they are really enjoying themselves. There are a few ad-libs and exchanges among the singers that some purests have found annoying, But I find them charming and makes the characters seem more real to me.. I LOVE THIS RECORDING!!!
