Middle of Nowhere: Religion, Art, and Pop Culture at Salvation Mountain Paperback – February 15, 2016

I was hoping for more of a comprehensive story about Leonard Knight's life and how the author and people who have made pilgrimages to Salvation Mountain were affected by it. It is more of an academic piece that I found a bit dry. (sorry) :(

This is a very comprehensive, well documented, brilliantly written study of Leonard's Knight's mountain. Fascinating reading about an amazing, often misunderstood man, who may well be a modern prophet.

I came to this book as a lover of the Californian deserts, and as a lifelong appreciator of outsider art, or "art brut", as it's sometimes known. Salvation Mountain exists in my mind in the liminal zone of landscape and culture, religion and truth. In this glowingly lovely book, Sara M. Patterson has illuminated her subject with profound, graceful insight; her writing is generous and non-judgmental, full of hope and wonder, and she has given us a truly spellbinding work on Leonard Knight's Salvation Mountain that will surely never be surpassed.Written accessibly and with deft prose, this book covers the history of Mr Knight and the story of the creation of his luminous desert monument. Although I'm not at all religiously minded, who can argue with the inclusive imprecation that God IS love, and Mr Knight's open-hearted invitation that has moved hundreds of thousands of visitors?Salvation Mountain is by nature and location ephemeral, but Sara M. Patterson has given us this book to delight and illuminate us, beyond the time when the searing sun will inevitably fade Mr Knight's gift. For this, I'm grateful.
