Gene Hackman attempts to exorcise some ghosts from his past by coaching a poor local basketball team into top league condition. Dennis Hopper turns in a fine performance as the town drunk with a wide knowledge of basketball whom Hackman rehabilitates into his assistant.

A little and lovely gem. WIth a gigantic Gene Hackman, a delicious Barbara Hersey and a great Dennis Hopper
A lovely and unknown little gem about simple and true feelings, dreams, dramas and human touch and weakness. Gene Hackman in one of his best performances ever, tough, lovable, able to convey a range of colors even without saying a word. A rough and deeply dramatic role that only an actor like him can make it able to bring emotions and positive energy passing through drama and failure, still not feeling like a clichè tale of redemption and good feeling. The guys and the background characters from the village are all very convincing and Barbara Hersey and Dennis Hopper have never been so good (this was one of Hopper's first important role in years, and the start for a second life and career. An apparently common and simple structure yet the story unfolds naturally and without ever turning into pure mainstream and feeling untrue and not sincere.

A great underdog story and basketball film.
An awesome film for me, I remember watching this as a kid and loving it. Gene Hackman is always great to watch and is excellent as the out of town coach with a hidden past. He has nothing to lose and a lot of work to do, to gain any respect from the town. He wastes no time in making enemies and his strict and unwavering rules breed resentment from the tiny town as they are unwilling to accept change and something new. It's brilliant to see Hackman stick to his convictions as he turns the team around and gives them all hope of success. Along this journey he also shows a softer side as he takes a risk on the town drunk, Dennis Hopper. A great underdog story.

Wonderful Movie
Although states region A on the packaging this release is region A & B, this is one of those really great feel-good sports movies that you can watch over and over again even if you do not like basketball. Only seen released in UK on dvd under the title "Best Shot", I assume the distributor thought what would Hoosier mean to anyone outside the US, but the meaning is clarified in the special features documentary.Note this version is the 25th anniversary release & not the older release which was region A locked
