Dickey Betts : Southern Legend.
After making a name for himself with the Allman Brothers Band,Dickey Betts formed his own group with the title of Dickey Betts and Great Southern. This is a cheap and easy way to get the ist two albums on a 2 on 1 CD release.Tracks 1-7 come from 'Great Southern (1977) and 8- 15 from 'Atlanta's Burning Down' (1978),note the 2nd album is 1978 and NOT 1988 as wrongly noted on the back of the case,as usual retroworld always have shoddy quality/proof reading, the booklet liner notes, while decent, are in the wrong order. The 2 albums are really good, laid back country rock, when your ears need some soothing from the Rock/Metal that usually abuse them. From the debut the highlights are the stunning 'Calafornia Blues' and beautiful 'Bougainvellea' the latter co-written with actor Don Johnson(Miami Vice) who contributes backing vocals. The 2nd album doesnt quite match up but still has a superb title track and excellent guitarplaying on 'Mr Blues Man'.If you like the Allmans' and country rock in general, then this will more than satisfy.

Dickey does it again
Here we have two fine albums for the price of one. This is another excellent addition to my Allman Brothers and Dickey Betts collection. I don't think that it's quite up to the standard of the best of the Allman Brothers or Dickey's first solo album 'Highway Call', but it's not far behind. Of the two albums, I just about prefer 'Dickey Betts & Great Southern', but that's only my preference. 'California Blues' is my favourite track on the album and showcases Dickey's superb guitar work. All the songs on both albums are well written and feature some first-class musicianship and lyrics.Dickey Betts was a force to be reckoned with during the 1970s and these two albums prove the point. Anyone who loves southern rock would be well advised to buy a copy before it goes out of print.

Timeless
"Dickey Betts and the Great Southern/Atlanta's Burning Down" is a refreshing album; the distinctive and melodious guitar work that the South is known for brings to mind sun big trees and Southern charm.Dickey Betts has played with just about every great Southern guitar based band and his graceful style is very intricate at times and always recognisable. The tranquil style doesn't lack energy and it is a great record (OK DVD)to either relax and dream to and yet, just as good to put on on when busy, as a 'pick-up - things to do' boost. His lyrics are always thoughtful and he seems to embody the courtly Southern gent in very his poetically observant lyrics. Betts has a style of his own within Southern guitar styles, having not heard either album since the early 80s, I was impressed with just how timeless his work is. It was a refreshing boost that doesn't sink you in nostalgia alone but is living music and a great mood for today.

Good studio twofer, now with correct tracks listed.
The correct tracks are now listed which they were not in 2010. Typical Dickey Betts stuff here - plenty of guitar noodling and interplay and as the name(s)imply a strong southern feel. Great Southern's best studio stuff by a mile. If you like Betts's Allmans contributions then you should like these.
